* Martin J. Rees - On Cosmology and the Future of Science (14 books)
MARTIN J. REES (b. 1942) is a British cosmologist and astrophysicist. He is the fifteenth Astronomer Royal, appointed in 1995, and Emeritus Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge.
Rees is one of the world's leading theorists in the field of astrophysics and cosmology. His early prediction that a black hole would be found at the centre of our galaxy was borne out by subsequent observations, and he was the first to propose that black holes power high-energy quasars. He has also made contributions to the origin of the CMB radiation, as well as to galaxy clustering and formation.
In addition to several technical works, Rees has written for the general public, exploring the links between science and philosophy and humankind’s place in the universe.
GRAVITY’S FATAL ATTRACTION (1995) contextualizes black holes in the larger astronomical discourse. BEFORE THE BEGINNING (1997) provides an overview of current astronomical knowledge, hypothesizing that the known universe is one of an infinite number of different universes. In OUR FINAL HOUR (2003), Rees states that humankind had only a 50% chance of surviving until 2100, and argues that the pace of technological change threatens to outstrip our ability to control it. THE END OF ASTRONAUTS (2022) advocates for space exploration without humans.
In his most recent work, IF SCIENCE IS TO SAVE US (2022), Rees argues that we need to think globally, rationally and long-term, empowered by 21st century technology but guided by values that science alone cannot provide.
