DESCRIPTION
In 1999, When he was hired as a rookie reporter for Yomiuri Shimbun. As a cadet, he describes being taken under the wing of Sekiguchi, an older detective. Adelstein was initially assigned to "tacky" Saitama, and the memoir covers his next 12 years as a staffer for the paper, describing 80-hour work weeks, relationship difficulties, and the interactions between crime reporters and the police. Specific cases involve the search for the killer of Lucie Blackman, and the memoir also details death threats after he published an expose on Tadamasa Goto. He also uncovered that Saitama Prefecture was altering scientific data on dioxin contamination.

Tokyo Vice è una serie basata sull'omonimo libro di memorie firmato da Jake Adelstein che raccontava i suoi anni vissuti nella metropoli giapponese come reporter per un importante quotidiano locale. Lo show vuole mostrare il mondo segreto e pericoloso della yakuza tra momenti ad alta tensione, situazioni gialle e inseguimenti alle notizie.
Jake Adelstein si trasferisce a Tokyo e dopo aver superato l'esame scritto in Giapponese riesce ad entrare all'interno di uno dei più importanti quotidiani nazionali nipponici. Deciso ad affrontare la gavetta riesce poco alla volta a ritagliarsi il suo spazio. Quando poi viene preso in simpatia da un detective veterano della polizia poco alla volta comincia a scoprire il mondo della criminalità organizzata giapponese.
