If there's one album that captures the might and magic of the 80s LA rock sound, this is it. Dokken's sophomore disc brags a superb, hook-heavy collection of songs augmented by the dreamiest vocal harmonies this side of Queen, and George Lynch's endless barrage of climactic axe attacks. The give and take between Dokken and Lynch keeps things incredibly fresh, avoiding the filler-esque formulas that many bands of the genre would develop. Just when "Bullets To Spare" starts to run out of gas, Lynch saves it with a gorgeous melodic interlude. Dokken's striking vocal performance in "Alone Again" is sideswiped by a ripping solo that ups the ante. Not to mention the wicked riffing in "When Heaven Comes Down" - the heaviest riff of the hair metal era? Perhaps.
While the follow-up, 1985's "Under Lock and Key" featured a fuller guitar sound and cleaned up Mick Brown's bass-drum-from-hell a little, it's tracklisting didn't boast the...um, teeth of this release. Yeah, sorry about that.
Guilty pleasure for sure, but I can't help but bust it out several times a year. Always considered it one of the 'primary color' releases along with VH1 that would be provide a template to be watered-down, mimicked, and copied endlessly by big labels cashing in until 1991.
Dokken had their back against the wall when they recorded “Tooth and Nail” in 1984. Their debut “Breaking the Chains” was a commercial disaster and their tour with Blue Öyster Cult cost them a lot of money so they were broke. Elektra gave them one last chance and Don Dokken was still convinced that he and his band would make it so he locked himself in his apartment in to write new songs for the upcoming album. Also the other band members bassist Jeff Pilson and guitarist George Lynch wrote new songs. Dokken was never able to work as a team not even at the very beginning of their career.
The band starts to record with producer Tom Werman, who produced Mötley Crüe’s “Shout at the Devil”, which was a big selling album in the previous year. But at the beginning of the record session the producer got sick and was replaced by Roy Thomas Baker, Don Dokken wanted Michael Wagner to produce the album but the label didn’t want to hire a nobody but agreed to give Wanger a chance to do the mix.
Don Dokken said that Roy Thomas was the “babysitter” who made sure that Lynch and Don Dokken are getting along good enough to record the songs while Wagner was working on the music.
The disputes between Dokken and Lynch became worse with every day, Jeff Pilson had to play the acoustic guitar in “Into the Fire”, because Georgey Lynch didn’t want that the song started with an acoustic intro.
Despite these ongoing fights between them they were able to finish the album eventually and it became a big success.
“Into the Fire”, “Just Got Lucky” and “Alone Again” became big selling singles and the album sold more than a million copies within a short time.
“Tooth and Nail” is a great melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock release from the 80s which features lot of killer songs. My personal favorites are the anthem “Into the Fire”, the final “Turn on the Action”, “When Heaven Comes Down” , “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and the power ballad “Alone Again”.
