Silent Echo by J. R. Rain
Not much could drag Jim Booker out of a peaceful, if lonely, retirement and back to late nights, crime scenes, and chases. Jim Booker is done with detective work and would just like to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day. But when an old friend shows up with a case about an old flame, Booker can’t say no.
What starts as a missing persons case soon delivers more than he bargained for, and when Booker’s own past offers clues, it’s clear that no one else can solve this mystery. But there’s a catch: Booker was given six months to live eight months ago.
Author J.R. Rain shows us that when it seems there’s nothing left to live for, there’s also nothing left to lose. His characters will take a chance on danger, doubt, even an unlikely romance—as long as they get a cup of coffee first.
From the Editor
It took me two years to land a book deal with J.R. Rain. We first talked in 2010, when he was already a bestselling self-published author thanks to the success of his Vampire for Hire series. It was a great chat, but he wasn't yet ready to leave the self-publishing path. I followed his prolific career with interest, and we exchanged friendly e-mails from time to time. Finally, in 2012, I sent him an e-mail with the subject line: IT'S JUST STUPID THAT WE'RE NOT WORKING TOGETHER. He laughed and agreed that it was, so now I'm thrilled to be presenting his newest work, Silent Echo.
In addition to being one of the friendliest, most down-to-earth people you'll ever meet, J.R. is a former private investigator who also knows the noirish and gritty side of life. Some of his best books have a dark edge that rings true because J.R. has been there. And with Silent Echo, he pulls off a cool trick: by completely avoiding all sentimentality, damned if he hasn't written a hard-boiled little novel that also kind of breaks your heart.
In Rain's usual lean prose, we follow Jim Booker as he works on one last missing-persons case. But there's a complication - Jim is literally running out of time. Eight months ago he was given six months to live. With its unflinching cynicism and fever-dream LA milieu, Silent Echo puts us deep in James Ellroy and James M. Cain territory for sure, but the book also has a lot to say about dignity, honor, acceptance, and forgiveness.
