La miniserie destaca la sangrienta historia de la Casa de Batiatus y la ciudad de Capua antes de la llegada de Spartacus. Quintus Lentulus Batiatus se hace lanista (el director) cuando él asume el ludus de su padre. Tiene la ambición de ganar a la sombra de su padre para buscar el reconocimiento de su propio nombre y encontrar la grandeza de su casa.
03 - Paterfamilias
Cuando Batiatus se encuentra celebrando su reciente acuerdo con Varus, su padre irrumpe en la casa tremendamente enfadado por las últimas noticias recibidas desde su retiro, a las que pretende poner solución. Mientras, Ashur e Indus siguen siendo humillados por el resto de gladiadores pese a tener la marca. Por otro lado, Oenomaus, ahora convertido en Doctore, no consigue hacerse respetar por lo que hace un día eran sus compañeros. De hecho cree que Gannicus no le mira a los ojos por sentirse humillado al obedecer sus ordenes.
