The investigation of the murder of an ex-con leads to the revelation that a man who was convicted of a crime 10 years before might be innocent--and it turns out that Van Buren was the lead investigator. The detectives eventually learn that the fingerprint technician had mistakenly identified the fingerprints that led to the conviction of the innocent suspect. They also suspect that over the years she has been claiming prints sent to her for identification were positive when in fact they were inconclusive.

DESCRIPTION
The show follows a crime, ususally adapted from current headlines, from two separate vantage points. The first half of the show concentrates on the investigation of the crime by the police, the second half follows the prosecution of the crime in court.

Series Plot: In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.
Episode plot: After a young woman has been raped and murdered, her body turns up in an industrial laundry facility. Detectives Benson and Stabler soon find that she was involved in an environmental group called CLEAN, and it isn't long before they track down the prime suspect. However, the case soon puts them in the line of fire and exposes a much larger mystery that includes even more victims. As the investigation progresses, Detective Benson builds a connection to a victim's daughter that invokes her own past in ways she never anticipated.
