[Okay-Subs] Jellyfish Can't Swim In The Night S1 (BD 1080p)
It's essay time! Let's talk about how Blu-Ray producers, including Crunchyroll and Sentai, are destroying their own products for no good reason.
It's easier to encode blurry video than to encode sharp video. By "easier," I mean that if you have a fixed amount of bitrate, you're less likely to create distracting video artifacts if you encode a blurry picture instead of a sharp picture. Therefore, if you blur a video before encoding it, you can achieve the same "quality" (in this case defined as lack of artifacts) at a lower bitrate.
Professionals who encode Blu-Rays and DVDs are aware of this phenomenon, so in order to encode the TV show or movie assigned to them without showing their viewers a blocky mess, they may choose to blur the picture—to "lowpass" it. Lowpassing is the process of destroying very fine/intricate (or "high frequency") details, and keeping the rest of the picture the same.
A simple method of lowpassing would be a blur. But the most common way to lowpass Blu-Rays and DVDs is apparently to perform a convolution on the video using lanczos. Like a blur, this process has each pixel incorporate information from surrounding pixels to reach a new value. And like a blur, this means that intricate detail in the video gets spread out (and lost), making it easier to encode without artifacting.
Intricate detail is a good thing, so a process that blurs away detail is obviously undesirable. Recently, Zewia discovered the precise method used to lowpass many DVDs and Blu-Rays—and furthermore, how to reverse the loss of detail by using a non-lowpassed source. This is useful in the case where we have a starved WEB source and a much-less-starved, but lowpassed, Blu-Ray source. We can use the WEB source to claw back the information lost in the blur.
Getting detail back is nice, and this process also allows us to eliminate annoying ringing on credits, overlays, sharp lineart, and detailed backgrounds. [Here is an impressive example from Sousou no Frieren](https://slow.pics/c/hpobp0nl). Through this process, we can create an image that looks better than either Crunchyroll or the JPBD. [Here is another example from this torrent](https://slow.pics/c/uuZvw4U2).
Every single Sentai and Crunchyroll Blu-Ray is lowpassed, meaning that they care more about making the video easier to encode at low bitrate than they do about preserving image detail. I have confirmed via testing that using standard methods of delowpassing reduces SSIMU2 scores (compared to not lowpassing) in 30Mbps Blu-Ray compatible encodes.
