Antonio Gramsci, Italian communist theorist and political leader, jotted some lines in his prison notebooks about Manzoni’s alleged paternalistic attitude to the lower class. He describes what he thinks Manzoni’s real attitude as “clearly a caste attitude, even in its religious Catholic form.”
For Manzoni the people do not have any “inner life,” any deep personality. They are “animals” and Manzoni is “benevolent” towards them, with exactly that benevolence of a Catholic society for the protection of animals. In a sense, Manzoni reminds one of the epigram about Paul Bourget: for Bourget a woman must have an income of 100,000 francs before she can have an inner life. . . . Manzoni’s attitude to the people is
the attitude of the Catholic Church to the people: one of indulgent benevolence, not shared humanity. . . . he finds “magnanimity,” “noble thoughts” and “great feelings” only in some of the upper class and in none of the people, who as a whole are basely animal-like.
Deprived of Manzoni's paternalism and conservatism, I Promessi Sposi is transformed into popular cinema, with two workers, Renzo and Lucia, as protagonists. Not instances of resignation, but claims of rights before the advent of Fascism.
