Muddy Waters- One More Mile – Chess Collectibles, Vol. 1 (1994)
Howlin’ Wolf- Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog – Chess Collectibles, Vol. 2 (1994)
Chess Records was an American record label based in Chicago, Illinois. It specialized in blues, R&B, soul, gospel music, early rock and roll, and occasional jazz releases.
Run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, the company produced and released many important singles and albums, which are now regarded as central to the rock music canon. Musician and critic Cub Koda described Chess Records as "America's greatest blues label."
Chess Records was based at several different locations on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, initially at two different locations on South Cottage Grove Ave. The most famous location was 2120 S. Michigan Avenue from around 1956 to 1965, immortalized by British rock group The Rolling Stones in "2120 South Michigan Avenue", an instrumental recorded at that address during their first U.S. tour in 1964; the Stones would record at Chess Studios on two more occasions. The building is now home to Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation.
The Chess Collectibles, issued on CD in the mid 90s, is a compilation series of rare and unusual recordings previously unreleased in the US. Volumes 1 and 2 of this series showcase two of Chess Records most influential blues masters, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, both of whose music has made an indelible footprint on the development of rock and roll.
Muddy Waters- One More Mile
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between November 30, 1948-June 22, 1966; and in Lausanne, Switzerland on June 13, 1972.
This two-disc set features previously unreleased tunes from Muddy's Chess tenure, recordings once thought to be irretrievably lost. Fortunately for blues fans, they've come to light, illuminating the legacy of Chicago Blues' foremost legend.
The recordings go back to the beginning of Muddy's Chess career (as early as 1948), and as far forward as the early '70s. While a double-disc collection of alternative cuts and rarities from a lesser artist might be riddled with inconsistencies, a giant like Muddy is well served by a compilation like One More Mile.
This is Volume 1 of the Chess Collectibles series.

Howlin’ Wolf - Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog
Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog contains 42 tracks recorded between 1951 and 1969. It includes 7 previously unreleased tracks. This double-disc set features rare and unissued performances, effectively cleaning out the Chess vaults of all but alternate takes of alternate takes. But these are no bottom-of-the-barrel scrapings here, quite the opposite. The first 14 tunes collect up the remainder of his Memphis recordings for Sam Phillips while the rest does the bootleggers one better, compiling masters that were previously only available on bad-sounding '70s vinyl albums, remastered for release on CD in the mid 90s.
This is Volume 2 of the Chess Collectibles series.
