Quality:
Pretty good! A bit of head turning / balance shifting of the stereo picture once in a while, but nothing too bad. A little more distant / ambient than the other recording that circulates from a DAT master clone copy. My analog sourced recording is more atmospheric, and maybe has some of that oldschool analog charm to it. I can't say my new source here now is better than what everyone already might have for this show, but I can say it is totally different and isn't much worse if it is not to your liking. They're just different, not better or worse, right? 8.5 outta ten, maybe? 9???
Notes:
I tracked this show partly around the structure of the master tapes. I've left in the blank tape gaps that represent the missing segments of recording where a tape flip occurred. I also included a taste of the intermission audio to round out the full concert experience for you. I equalized in a fair bit of lower and mid bass frequencies to compensate for the poor bass response of the mic used. I have not fixed the fluctuations in balance due to microphone shifting positions as my head moves around. I did repair a major master tape recording volume change that I originally did on the fly at the beginning of the second set. There may be another minor record volume change elsewhere, but it is not as noticeable as the one I fixed.
I don't want to write a book of personal stories for this one right now like I usually do. I taped this show and the next night at The Gorge. These were difficult shows on me to record, as I had a freshly broken big toe for the journey. Ouch. It was a hard road trip with a group of us in a small car. It was a great pair of shows, but a painful time. It hurt to see Rush this time. My recordings of this show have not really been put out there before now. So many shows on tape - so little time to transfer them! The other show from The Gorge will come some other day. I have plenty of tapes to work on these days, even shows from 3 taper buddies finally opening their collections for transfer and torrent. I hope to have some golden gems from some major tapers' vaults released this summer, but more about that another time...
I was ready with a third blank tape to switch to at what turned out to be the end of the show. That's why the end of the concert stops so suddenly. Other than needlessly flipping to a third tape to capture the crowd leaving the building (which I have since erased), my other tape flip breaks all were timed well, not really missing anything. I didn't have such good luck the next night at The Gorge, but I was glad I still had that third blank tape! That's a story for another torrent...
I did not put a big push to transfer this for several years because there is a DAT clone source of this show that circulates under two packages that are EQ'd and mastered a bit differently to each other but are from the same master source. It sounds good and has been around for years, so I wasn't so worried that nobody had heard this show. I recently got the inspiration to compare it to my masters again so I transferred it, and I think they're both pretty good recordings. I think the DAT is a little bassy and is a little lacking in punch in the vocals, but does sound very close without a lot of audience noise. Mine isn't as overloaded with lows, but does have a little more ambient noise both good and bad. Mine sounds more like the concert really sounded to my ears, more natural and "organic" than the DAT. Then again, I might like mine more because the mic was mounted right between my ears, so it captured almost exactly the sound that I heard that night.
Please do not share lossy copies of this show. Pervert the files to eMPty3 or other loser codecs for your own personal use only, and destroy them when finished. Don't EnCrap them to 128kbps to post them on you blog for your online buddies. Feel free to freely share pure lossless copies of the show anywhere you want to! Friends don't let friends listen lossy. Burn audio CDR's for your buddies and spread them around, sure! If you might share with someone that will want to trade this show in the future, please provide them with the full FLAC fileset as it was originally shared. Don't re-rip an audio CDR of this show to re-torrent it - use the original fileset! Don't buy, don't sell. If you re-post this show elsewhere, please share all files as you got them. If you need to make your corrections or additions to my notes, add a new (different) text file to the fileset - don't delete, edit, or remove any of the original files (hey - two of those mean the same thing!) but go ahead and include additional files such as artwork for future sharing.
Do not bother trying to Re-Re-Re-ReMaster this show from this fileset. The files have already been processed once, as well as them being "only" CD quality files. One day I plan to post the hi-res raw master clone files at 24 96 both for the audiophile bootleg purists and the other wannabe rebastardizers out there! hahaha. You can re-work the sound all you want from the master files.
I've included scans of my cassettes and the J-card covers for the tapes with ticket stubs from the show and receipts for the tapes, batteries, parking, and the ferry trip home. It's not quite a cover for a CD, but it's something. If you're a budding graphic designer, please go ahead and make some cool photoshop-ey coverart for this show. Please share it attached to comments in the thread at as large and high resolution as you can, and please if you could email me copies I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for listening - hope you enjoy this new source of an old show.
...and as usual, Trader's Little Helper did this gobbledegook......
