Luther Allison aurait mérité d’être célébré telle une icône du XXè siècle, mais le destin le privera d’une reconnaissance unanime à laquelle il aspirait tant. Né en 1939 dans l’Arkansas, Luther Allison connaîtra les humiliations et les brimades du bluesman noir dans l’Amérique ségrégationniste. C’est la raison pour laquelle, toute sa vie, il cherchera à rapprocher les cultures, à provoquer des rencontres et à partager son enthousiasme avec ses contemporains. Alors que sa renommée semblait le hisser au rang des grandes figures de notre temps, la maladie le rongeait de l’intérieur. Le 12 août 1997, Luther Allison nous quittait, fauché en pleine gloire par un cancer sournois et indétectable. Un mois plus tôt, il était encore sur scène, heureux de pouvoir échanger et dialoguer avec un public qui l’acclamait avec chaleur et un profond respect.
Luther Allison avait un fils, Bernard Allison, qui a dû batailler ferme pour se faire un prénom tant l’aura de son père était imposante. Il reconnaît aujourd’hui volontiers que la figure paternelle lui fit parfois de l’ombre : "Beaucoup de gens connaissaient mon père avant de me connaître moi. Il y a toujours eu ce réflexe de dire : "Bernard Allison, le fils de Luther Allison". J’espère qu’on prendra l’habitude de m’appeler Bernard, plutôt que le fils de… Certes, c’est la réalité mais j’ai aussi un prénom. Ça peut être bon comme mauvais. Je pense qu’aujourd’hui le nom Bernard Allison est mieux connu, les gens font plus facilement la différence entre le père et le fils au niveau de la voix et du jeu de guitare. Je pense que ça passera mais lentement. Il y aura toujours quelqu’un pour dire "le fils de Luther", je comprends très bien cela, il faut être patient pour que le public vous reconnaisse en tant qu’artiste à part entière, vienne à votre concert ou achète votre CD et se dise enfin : "Je viens de voir Bernard Allison, il ne sonne pas comme son père". Voilà le genre de réflexion que j’attends, être reconnu en mon nom propre". (Bernard Allison au micro de Joe Farmer).
La disparition de Luther Allison, à quelques jours de son 58è anniversaire, fut un choc psychologique brutal et violent pour nombre de ses admirateurs et amis. Le regretté guitariste et chanteur français Patrick Verbeke nous avait souvent parlé de son ami Luther Allison, et a longtemps gardé en mémoire cette triste journée d’été 1997. Patrick Verbeke nous a également quittés en plein mois d’août, c’était le 22 août 2021. Les deux complices au grand cœur sont désormais réunis au-delà des cieux…
Un autre musicien de grand talent a souvent partagé la scène avec Luther Allison. Il s’agit du trompettiste Boney Fields. Il ne manque d’ailleurs pas d’interpréter régulièrement le titre Freedom emprunté à son ancien partenaire de scène. Cette chanson, paru sur l’album Rich Man en 1987, dénonçait le régime d’apartheid en Afrique du Sud et, plus généralement, toutes les discriminations raciales constatées sur notre planète. Luther Allison était un homme de paix qui s’interrogeait souvent sur les manifestations quotidiennes du racisme dit "ordinaire ". Il ne comprenait pas que Chuck Berry n’ait jamais été considéré comme le créateur du rock’n’roll. Il fulminait lorsque l’on célébrait Elvis Presley. Il n’hésitait pas à affirmer que l’on avait privé Chuck Berry du statut de "King" à cause de la couleur de sa peau.
Luther Allison était un artiste altruiste souvent irrité par les injustices et les inégalités sociales. 25 ans après sa disparition, son discours et sa musique sont tristement toujours d’actualité !
