Dopo aver intercettato le trasmissioni della serie televisiva terrestre degli anni 80, "Galaxy Quest", credendo che si trattasse di documenti storici, un gruppo di ribelli alieni chiede al Capitano Peter Quincy Taggart e tutti i suoi colleghi, di aiutarlo a sconfiggere i suoi malvagi oppressori. Inizialmente gli attori credono che si tratti di uno scherzo, ma ben presto si accorgono che tutto è sin troppo reale e si trovano costretti impersonare realmente gli impavidi eroi dell' NCA Protector, la nave spaziale della quale interpretano l'equipaggio.
Galaxy Quest inizia come una simpatica commedia e si trasforma in un piacevole film di fantascienza grazie alla bravura dell'intero cast e alla maestria del genio degli effetti speciali Stan Winston. Indubbiamente il film segue alcuni stereotipi classici dei film di fantascienza, tuttavia si distingue sia per l'acume con cui ci propone una parodia di "Star Trek" sia per gli ottimi dialoghi attribuiti ad un cast scelto a pennello. Galaxy Quest si rivela un film superiore alle attese.
