The bonus screenings of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival look more like a series of strength tests than a series of long-awaited premieres. If Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" became a special event along with the competition films, then other audience sessions can hardly boast of convincing. It seems as if the critics behaved so badly all year that Peer Noel Thierry Fremaux (director of the festival — editor's note) decided to leave a bag of coals as a gift to journalists. The screening opened with a vulgar soap drama about the king's favorite "Jeanne Dubarry", "Disney" shook out the dusty closet of "Indiana Jones", Rodriguez's action movie "Hypnotist" landed in midnight screenings (occupied a niche "so bad it's even good"), and the first two episodes of "Idol" suffered an inevitable crash. It was decided to close the festival on a touching note — a new Pixar cartoon.
Welcome to the Elemental city, which looks like Zveropolis from afar, but crumbles into the elements: air, water, earth and fire. The viewer is also invited to associate with the flaming migrants: the newcomers are sent to a kind of ghetto, where the flaming ones do not interfere with the rest of the townspeople with burning touches. The father of the family, Bernie (Ronaldo del Carmen), opens a shop of wonders (all sorts of edible coals, volcanic lamps and other thematic rubbish), and life gradually enters a new channel. Having grown up, his daughter Amber (Lea Lewis) is having difficulties working in the service sector: communicating with impatient customers is not easy, and the "water" inspector Wade (Mamoudou Ati) has thrown up trouble by checking.
I would like to categorically call "Elemental" one of the main failures of Pixar from the threshold. Despite the understandable and articulated metaphor of racial segregation (Asian migrants are recognized in the fiery class, but if desired, they can be considered both Mexicans and Jews), the structure of the world of elements endlessly fails.
Of course, it's quite presumptuous to scold animation for conventionality, but the fictional universe comes to life when it obeys the set rules. The fire men burn through everything in the world, then sit on wooden chairs. Water, when heated to boiling water, evaporate, and do not become, say, air elements. Land babies repeat the same gag with a flower under their arm. You can list the sloppy nuances for a long time, but the main trouble is that any flaws can sink into an exciting adventure and be invisible behind the general charm of animation. The already mentioned Zveropolis was carefully built, invented and designed — the whole family wanted to move to the brutal city in order to look into every corner and visit all the furry inhabitants. The elemental does not need to expand the boundaries, but a stable foundation that will not shake under the gusts of the plot
