Evan Haywood (b. 1989) is a singer-songwriter, music producer, and visual artist from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is the owner of the Black Ram Sound record label, and runs the Black Ram Treehouse recording studio. After a decade of performing with hip-hop collective Tree City, Evan released his first solo LP, Ramshackles, in 2016. Since then, he has continued to hone his unique sound, which is steeped in folk tradition with a restless experimental edge. Touching on genres as disparate as psych folk, country rock, blues, baroque classical, spiritual jazz, funk and soul, he has built a modest but devoted fanbase of record collectors and weirdos, particularly in his home state of Michigan. Much of Evan's music is recorded with vintage analog equipment and instruments in order to achieve his signature sound, which is raw and lo-fi while remaining warm and robust. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, he has worked with musicians from locales including India, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, and all over the United States. With a strong DIY ethos and a strikingly independent artistic vision, his music continues to influence and inspire artists across many genres.
This is a live album drawn from three performances throughout Michigan, with dates ranging from 2014-2018. The Canterbury House performance in 2014 was my first ever live set as a solo artist, while the Third Man Records show with my band in 2018 was one of my last. I am currently stepping back from performing to focus solely on creating music in the studio.
This year, I will be releasing a lot of the recordings from my personal vault. I feel this is some of my best material and I am excited to get it out there. I put my soul into these performances and expressed myself to the best of my abilities. I hope you will enjoy them. Thanks!
