Thor (Chris Hemsworth), perhaps the most sensitive jock of the Avengers, came out of depression, learned Buddhism and discovered the emptiness in his heart that formed after breaking up with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Jane at the same time discovered cancer at the 4th stage of development, and since doctors could not help, the heroine went to the call of Mjolnir (the former hammer of Thor) and became a goddess. Speaking of the gods, they really offended Gorr (Christian Bale) by mocking the death of his only daughter, so Gorr, with a cursed sword at the ready, decided to exterminate them. The road led the killer of the gods to Asgard, so Thor, Jane, Valkyrie and Kork need to stop Horus, even if they have to turn to Zeus himself (Russell Crowe) for help.
What happens if you give an independent New Zealand director $185 million and say "do what you want"? So we found out — he will arrange a psychedelic party to the best hits of Guns'n'Roses, insert jokes about orgies into a family movie and even invite Melissa McCarthy to play Hela. Taika Waititi has never taken his projects too seriously, so the director's cinema always looks like one big playground, just always with different budgets. His early works "Boy" or "Eagle against Shark" are filled with childlike spontaneity, but at the same time there is a completely mature reflection in them. The same energy is present in the new "Torah": the infantile hero undergoes inhuman trials, faces earthly pain and accepts the blows of fate with therapeutic irony, showing all the signs of spiritual growth.
In addition to all of the above, Waititi is famous for touching children's stories ("Boy", "Hunting Savages", "Joe Joe Rabbit", etc.). In "Thor" the author creates a whole children's army of little demigods: the central character also becomes a child, and the leitmotif is unconditional love. "Thor" is not so much a Marvel film as the multimillion—dollar brainchild of Waititi himself: his voice is felt in funny dialogues, infantilism in ridiculous situations, a craving for humanism in the characters prescribed by him.
Journalists did not rate such a touching intonation very highly (68% on Rotten tomatoes), attacking Taika with criticism, scolding his "frivolous" approach to such an essential matter as the film adaptation of a children's comic book. At first, professionals want to see independent directors at the helm of big projects, and then either complain that the studios give them too little freedom, or grumble that the director is too loose. It's getting harder to please the public every year, although maybe it's because the market is oversaturated with superhero content, but certainly not in the director's style of Waititi. Previously, if the viewer needed to be reminded of what happened in one of the endless parts of The Avengers, it was prescribed in the replicas of the characters or very poorly mounted in flashbacks. Taika integrated the recaps of the previous parts of the franchise not into the usual tedious dialogues, but into theatrical productions with unexpected celebrity cameos or even into the "romcom trailer" in order to quickly run through the history of Thor and Jane's relationship. Waititi seems to play by Marvel's rules, but at the same time goes far beyond what is expected, which is why the director was able to make the boring thunder god a really interesting character.
Chris Hemsworth himself was not against pushing Thor a little further than the cliched image of a stern bully with a magic hammer. His character continues to destroy masculine stereotypes, and the charisma and sense of humor of the actor endow the Scandinavian with the necessary attractiveness to be rightfully called the "main character". Although the show in the film is still stolen by Christian Bale, who played the vengeful Gorr. Since the days of "American Psycho," we know that death suits him, and Bale plays antagonists as if the actor already has the Oscar in his hands (it's a pity that superhero movies are rarely missed beyond technical nominations). So the multimillion-dollar matinee with Hollywood stars was a success, and even if the serious method actor Christian Bale is ready to postpone his lifetime contract with David O' russell for a while and play with everyone in the sandbox, I see no reason not to join the celebration
