In early November, the film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was released worldwide, which was originally conceived as a sequel to the story of T'Challa performed by the notorious Chadwick Bozeman. However, the tragic death of the actor has put Disney producers in a difficult dilemma: how can we continue the story of the Black Panther without the main character? The decision came quickly. For the sake of the current femcontext, T'Challa's successor was chosen by his younger sister Shuri (Letisha Wright), a gifted technogeny who, according to all the canons of superhero cinema, fit more into the image of Robin than Batman.
The events of the second "Black Panther" follow the death of T'Challa, which occurred after a short illness of the hero. In fact, three people are busy ruling the leaderless Wakanda: Princess Shuri, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and the warrior Okoye (Danai Gurira). The outside world, from which the African country has been so stubbornly hiding for many years, continues to become a threat: CIA officers begin an active hunt for vibranium. Along the way, Shuri also stumbles upon an ancient underwater tribe led by Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia), who threatens to attack Wakanda if he is not handed over the scientist responsible for inventing a machine for detecting valuable metal. In the end, Shuri realizes that her homeland needs a defender more than ever, and tries to become the new Black Panther.
After the death of Chadwick Bozeman, which came as a real surprise to the entire Black Panther film crew, director Ryan Coogler seriously considered leaving the project, but in the end he was still able to rewrite the script of the film so that the ephemeral presence of the late superhero could be felt in it: "Wakanda Forever" opens with a solemn farewell ceremony with T'Challa; all of Shuri's throwing is somehow related to her unwillingness to compete with her brother's figure and take his place in the ranks of the Avengers; Wakanda, left without a ruler, is constantly under attack from other states. It would seem that everything screams about the need for a successor to Black Panther, but the crisis of Shuri's self-identification as a new superheroine turns out to be unreasonably prolonged.
As a result, instead of the usual popcorn action, Wakanda Forever presents countless dialogues about gaining power, losing power, or transferring it. And if for most of the antagonists of the film, the theme of possession and control is built around obtaining the cherished vibranium, then for the protagonist Shuri herself, power is a departure from someone else's fate and a simple human desire to be herself. Alas, all these emotional lamentations are devalued in the second act, when literally the version of Black Panther 2.0 appears in the frame. In gratitude to Kugler, it is worth saying that, unlike the same Taiki Waititi, he does not try to mold Shuri into a patriarchal version of a superheroine, leaving her the opportunity to intuitively interact with new abilities and not forgetting about her passion for technology.
In the first part of Black Panther, Wakanda acted as a kind of utopian African state, which literally miraculously managed to escape from the influence of European colonialism. In the second part, an advanced country actually becomes a battlefield for third parties eager to acquire its resources. In the context of world history, Kugler's anti—colonial message is undoubtedly important, but in the framework of epic superhero cinema, where pathos increasingly contradicts the call of reason, he fits in with extremely great difficulty, excessively pulling the blanket over himself and taking away the main thing from the tape - entertainment. In the end, it seems that there is more political manifestation in Wakanda Forever than the actual story of the formation of the new Black Panther — and after all, it is for her that viewers primarily go to watch this film
