Bauhaus is a British musical group formed in 1978 in Northampton and existed (with interruptions) until 2008. Initially, the group was called Bauhaus 1919 (in honor of the architectural movement that originated in 1919 in Germany), but the musicians soon abandoned the use of numbers in the name. Most critics recognize Bauhaus as one of the founders and most prominent representatives of gothic rock.
According to renowned music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Bauhaus shaped the canons of gothic rock by combining the compositional minimalism of post-punk with sharp guitar chords and the cold, distant sound of keyboards; at the same time, as Erlewine notes, the group was not afraid to experiment and willingly used elements of glam rock, funk, electronic music and even heavy metal in their work.
