Note : I hadn't seen this in a while, but this new Shout! Factory 4k remaster is an excellent opportunity to revisit a film that is so extreme in every sense that it's a miracle it had the budget and the mainstream success it did. A pinnacle of postmodern cinema and a full frontal attack on the senses, it mixes ultraviolence, a banging soundtrack, "MTV" editing, a mix of every visual media known to man, including a heightened, weird-looking overlit 35mm, grainy 16mm black and white, kind of shitty digital video, very shitty analog video, Americanized anime, and stock footage, sometimes in the same shot using kind of bad back projection, into a whirlwind of a film that also, magically, Has a Lot to Say about violence, the media, and Society, man, and to top off the 90s credentials, it was co-written by Quentin Tarantino. But most of all, it's just a fucking ride, like an amoral tweaker's version of Koyaanisquatsi with more murder. It also has the Platonic ideal of a Hell of a Cast, and it's huge, with everyone from Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, through Tom Sizemore, Robert Downey Jr., and Tommy Lee Jones, to even Rodney Dangerfield, Balthazar Getty, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Ashley Judd, Adrien Brody and Denis Leary in small roles.
Mickey and Mallory Knox are a young couple who's very much in love. They're also totally insane serial killers with traumatic pasts, who go on a rampage across the American Southwest, and who gradually get the attention of the unscrupulous media and the general public all across the world, becoming a sort of outlaw superstars while the slaughter basically everyone they come across. On their trail is detective Jack Scagnetti, who's obsessed with serial killers after witnessing his mother killed by Charles Whitman, and tabloid journalist Wayne Gale, the host of the popular TV show "American Maniacs". After a mushroom trip gone bad where they end up murdering an old Native American man who took them in, our star-crossed heroes get bitten by rattlesnakes, try to hold up a pharmacy to get antidote, and finally get arrested and sent to a notorious high security prison. One year later, they're due to be transferred to separate psychiatric hospitals for the criminally insane, but Scagnetti plots with the tyrannical warden McClusky to have them killed during the transfer, while Gale manages to get Mickey to give him a live interview right after the Super Bowl, and the explosion of media attention combined with a riot in the prison sets everyone on a collision course.
This is a very good looking remaster, I have basically nothing to complain about at all. As you might have noticed, this is encoded at a very high bitrate, even for me, but the film has so much going on visually, so many different textures, fast cuts, single-frame flashes, and general madness that I wanted to make sure everything was encoded absolutely faithfully (and it's a two-hour movie, so it was never going to be a small file). 5.1 track sounds great too, director's commentary track is very interesting, all in all a perfect release of a classic film.
