Note : You freaks seemed to like The Monster Squad last week, so here's director Fred Dekker's first film, an unholy mashup of at least three different horror/sci-fi films, and a loving tribute to 50s-70s B-movies. It also marks a return for our favorite throbbingly mustachioed pockmark sex symbol Tom Atkins, who mercifully has no sex scenes here, but is rather more believable in his role as a fucked-up, chainsmoking slob of a cop. There's also Jason Lively, who you might remember as Rusty, the son in National Lampoon's European Vacation. All the characters are named after horror and sci-fi directors, much like Death Machine did, which will give you an idea of the vibe this is going for. A very fun movie that also has a fair amount of good practical effects and gnarly gore.
In 1959, an alien aboard a space ship is being hunted by two of his crewmates as he's stolen a canister containing a dangerous experiments, and he jettisons it into space, where it eventually crashes on Earth. The canister contains slug-like creatures that orally invade a man on a date with his girlfriend, just as his girlfriend is attacked by an axe-wielding maniac. 27 years later, Chris Romero is a new student at Corman University, and decides to join a fraternity to impress Cynthia Cronenberg, a girl he just met. Cynthia's boyfriend is the head of the fraternity, and challenges Chris and his friend J.C. Hooper to steal a cadaver from the university medical building. By coincidence, they stumble into a secret room where they find a strange corpse frozen in a glass cylinder, but it turns out it's not dead after all, and after they flee, the reanimated corpse kills a medical student and escapes. This sets grizzled cop Ray Cameron on their trail, as he tracks the corpse to a sorority house, where its head has split open, spilling out slugs. A chain reaction of reanimated corpses and zombie infections follow, and Romero must team up with Hooper, Cronenberg, and Cameron to save the day.
This remaster is not fantastic, but it looks fine, with at least good color and contrast, albeit slightly fuzzy and grainy. The 5.1 remaster is good, and both the commentary tracks are worthwhile.
