Note : My last upload featuring Ingrid Pitt in a boobalicious 70s Hammer production went over rather well, so here's another one, and it's actually the first in the Karnstein Trilogy, a series of Hammer adaptations of Sheridan LeFanu's Carmilla, and you know what that means... It means lesbian vampires. Very lesbian vampires. Also, Peter Cushing is a very serious spoilsport as usual, and the rest of the cast is a group of solid British character actors. It's not bad at all, though hardly as scandalous now as when it first premiered.
A female vampire is hunted and beheaded by a vampire hunter seeking to avenge the death of his sister. Many years later, a countess living next to General Spielsdorf's estate asks him to take in her daughter Marcilla while she leaves to visit a sick relative. Marcilla befriends Spielsdorf's daughter Laura, who soon starts suffering from anemia and recurring dual boob punctures. After a while, Laura dies and Marcilla disappears. Spielsdorf goes off to find the vampire hunter he'd seen in the film's prologue, and in the meantime Marcilla, now going by the name Carmilla, reunited with the countess, and they try to pull the same scam again on Mr. Morton and his daughter, who soon also starts suffering from sudden tit bleeds. However, the Karnstein family's secrets are coming to light, and Morton's butler Renton, Spielsdorf, and vampire hunter from before the title sequence Baron Hartog are on the case. Will they make it on time before all of the Austrian province of Styria runs out of boob-blood?
This is a pretty decent remaster, although it suffers from a few color problems. On one hand, reds are often way too saturated, and on the other, there's a distinct lack of color information in the shadows, typical of restored faded color film, which makes everyone look like they have a little bit of a five o clock shadow. Sharpness is decent, and the contrast is subtle enough to show off the often very nice gothic sets and matte paintings. Mono track sounds fine, and there are more commentary tracks than you could ever wish for.
