Finally, a collected ENG release of Dragon Ball’s Full Color print! This first batch, covering the beginning of the story up to the end of the RRA/Fortuneteller arc, is the culmination of over a year of effort, revision, changes, more revisions, and then some more effort. In all ways, the intent of these releases is to bring the viewing experience of an English speaking user as close to that which a native Japanese speaking person experienced as they read.
# **Contents:**
**Source:** Japanese Digital Full Color Release – Akraa Light Upscale*
_*There are sharper upscales out there, but unfortunately they all introduce more upscale artifacts. The upscale used here still introduces artifacts every once in a while, but in those cases we have hand-corrected them._
**Translation:** Viz Translation + Tracksuit Retranslation Fixes*
_*Viz’s translation for Dragon Ball is actually pretty fine, for the most part. But for the parts that are bad, we have enlisted the help of some well known (JLPT Certified) JP speaking folks from the DB fandom to help correct any “Viz-isms” back to their original intent. This process uses [Herms’ “Viz-isms”](https://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32240) thread as a base, and then expands beyond with a similar process. These corrections include character names (no more Full Metal Jacket), made-up chapter titles, viz-invented jokes, poor translations, etc. We plan on having an indexed document of every change one day, but don't have that at the moment._
**Sound Effects:** SFX are tricky. Redrawing sound effects can cover (or uncover) original art, which is no good. In-line or sub-panel sfx notes tend to really clutter a page visually. And leaving the SFX untranslated can often be confusing for more pivotal SFX. As a result, this release takes a hybrid approach. For fight sound/onomatopoeia sound effects, we have left them untranslated. As for more pivotal, less self evident, or outright dialogue SFX, we have translated them either by replacing the original in cases where absolutely no original art is altered, or in-line next to the original in cases where that is not possible. No solution is perfect, and this certainly isn't a conventional one, but it reads well in practice.
# **Q&A:**
**Will this translation be ported to the original B&W manga?**
Yes. Once Seed of Might has released all of their new Kanzenban scan, we will be porting this translation over to that base as well.
**My favorite joke is missing!**
If something is missing from what you are accustomed to, it is only because it is something Viz invented of their own accord, and has been corrected here. If there are any diehards for [this](https://i.imgur.com/AcNsxVH.png) joke, then my condolences.
**What happened to Muten Roshi/Gyūmaō/Uranai Baba/etc?**
Furthering the effort to have this be the most faithful and native-reading version of the manga yet, some character name translations (or lack thereof) have been changed. These are pretty much all taken from Kanzenshuu’s internal naming style guide. This will result in some obvious changes – like replacing Viz’s “Hercule” silliness – but also applies to some smaller changes as well. Less obvious names, like the aforementioned “Full Metal Jacket”, are no-brainers. But even beyond that, there are more complicated cases like Muten Roshi/Kame Sen’nin. There are resources online for why these names are best suited to be translated as they appear in this release (in fact, Kanzenshuu themselves still haven't updated their pages with this revised naming guide for these three), but feel free to do some digging online if you are unaware of these. Suffice to say, if a name has been changed, a LOT of thought went into it.
**When will the next batch be out?**
Not sure! But likely much less time than this batch took. In the early days, we went through a lot of revisions, waffling over small things like approaches to SFX, names, etc. Now that our style guide is bullet proof, things move along much quicker!
