Shostakovich - His Life and Music (Course Great Masters in 8 lectures, 45 minutes/lecture): Ph.D., University of California at Berkeley Professor Robert Greenberg provides careful, gripping accounts of the political circumstances amid which Shostakovich composed his masterworks—meaning above all his 15 symphonies and 15 string quartets.
An Informer's Duty theatricalises in a BBC Radio 3 full cast production Leningrad in 1937: Shostakovich is under official attack as Stalin's terror decimates his world. He cannot compose Soviet anthems, his fourth symphony is too dangerous to perform - and yet, as the Soviet Union's premier composer, he must respond to the times.
