Put a fence in front of these men... and they'll climb it! - In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history - brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn - who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted.
One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape, released in 1963, is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W. R. Burnett (Little Caesar) and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that "entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs" (Variety).
This set of features have been taken from bonus disc that complements the 2-Disc Collector's Edition of John Sturges's thrilling World War II film.
2) Great Escape: The Untold Story
This is the story of The Great Escape in 1944 of 76 men from Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Sagan on the borders of Poland. The Stalag Luft III held 10,000 Allied airmen of all nationalities during the Second World War, and was escape proof. But for Allied prisoners of war, it was their duty to escape. This documentary tells the story of the brave and resourceful men who organised the historic Great Escape and paid a tragic price for carrying out their duty. 3 got home, 73 were captured, 50 of whom were secretly shot on the instructions of Hitler against every rule of War.
