I came across this album completely by accident. Specifically, it was sent to me by a friend, whose taste does not always coincide with mine. But what was the harm in checking it out, eh? Well, it quickly turned out that sometimes it's worth giving an ear to something theoretically doomed to fail. Varnheim is a band from Płock, which includes, among others, members of the death metal band Baalberith. Here, however, the music that the gentlemen create is completely different. I don't know how things were on the debut, but "Aura" is almost three quarters of an hour of very addictive and played at a high level of black metal. Probably everyone with average brains will notice a lot of Mgła inspirations on this album from the beginning. Because the way of building the composition, the guitar tuning or, above all, the characteristic melody, such associations can actually come to mind. However, this is not only direct copying in the style of German Groza, which is not. And this makes me happy and speaks strongly in favor of Varnheim, because you also need to be able to take lessons from a master and at the same time learn something more useful than just literal quotes. The five tracks on this album are based primarily on good arrangements. There are no unnecessary, forced fragments here. Everything fits together very nicely and complements. The whole is also very skillfully balanced and not monothematic. So, next to faster parts, we will find here some nostalgic slowdowns and climatic elements. Also the vocals are not on one hoof. Apart from screaming, there are parts that are shouted or sung in a low key, specifically in the Polish-language "Aura IV". There is a lot of space in these compositions, thanks to which "Aura" is listened to with great pleasure from beginning to end. In addition, this material quite quickly falls into memory and even when the album ends, it hums in the head alone. It's also very even and elegantly produced, so I'm really surprised that none of the publishers decided to take the boys under their wing. Anyone who enjoys cold, but black metal with an original melody should check out these crew, because they recorded material that stands out above the average, well-thought-out material and certainly for many listens. Write to the guys for the album, because such bands are truly worth supporting.
