Detroit. Robert "Bob" Wheeler gestisce l'azienda di calzini MaxDot creata dall'ormai defunto padre insieme alla madre Dottie, al fratello Douglas e alla sorella Christina. Divorziato da anni, in seguito ad un infarto si risveglia in ospedale e vede l'infermiera Abishola da cui è subito attratto. La donna, un'immigrata nigeriana che vive col figlio Dele a casa degli zii Olu e Tunde, è sola dopo che il marito è tornato in Africa, inizialmente respinge le avances dell'uomo, nonostante gli zii, la collega Gloria e l'amica Kemi la spingano a sistemarsi il prima possibile col ricco statunitense, ma finisce con iniziare ad uscire col gentile Bob.
