Tormentato dal rischio di essere riconosciuto trascorre una vita piuttosto tranquilla, passando le sere a seguire notiziari, vedere film e le sue vecchie pubblicità registrate in videocassetta, che gli rievocano i tempi passati. La storia si sposta nel passato, quando Saul usava ancora il suo vero nome, James "Jimmy" McGill, e cercava in tutti i modi di affermarsi come avvocato. Suo fratello Chuck è un ottimo avvocato e fondatore dello studio legale HHM, ma fermo a causa di una presunta elettrosensibilità. I rapporti col fratello si incrinano a causa del carattere esuberante che ha sempre contraddistinto Jimmy con annesse le scorciatoie per raggiungere il successo professionale.
