Episode 39
"Swing Away! The Promised Hardball"
A boy named Naoki is on the verge of giving up baseball, but a drifter teaches him the proper way to swing and promises to be at his district tournament. But when he goes missing, the boy is disheartened and concerned. Meanwhile, Exceedraft is investigating a jewel theft using a powerful laser weapon. When these two incidents come crashing together and Kosaku and the drifter and abducted, it's up to Kosaku to set things right.
NOTES:
This is the last Kyoko Sagiyama episode in the Rescue Police trilogy, and after years of me making fun of her weird interest in including magic stuffed animals and psychic girls in a supercop show, I am pleased to say that finally, in her last episode in the trilogy, she knocks it out of the park, no pun intended. This is a very slickly written episode that, again, no pun intended, covers all its bases.
A few items of interest:
When Naoki is telling Kosaku about how Yasu trained him, notice the sad music that plays during the flashback. That's not Exceedraft music -- that's Solbrain's theme!
At 19:02, notice the traffic backed up on the loop exit in the background. Wonder if they saw them filming the series?
Tetsuji Endo, Yasukawa's actor, was a regular in many detective series in the 90s. He also provided voices for Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Go Nagai's Scary Zone.
The jewel thieves are prolific in-suit actors for most of the 90s. Jiro Okamoto in particular is the actor for Fire, Knight Fire, Redder, Bill Goldy, Blue Beet, Gun Gibson, and Black Beet, among others!
