DESCRIPTION
Young Merlin is a teenager, discovering and then learning to master his magical gift. Magister Gaius, King Uther Pendragon's learned court physician to whom he's assigned as humble page, teaches him medicine, coaches his magical self-study, and warns him of Uther's strong aversion to magic. Merlin becomes squire to the noble but imprudent crown prince, Arthur, whose fate is linked with Merlin.

Il regno di Camelot era abitato dalla Magia e quindi da maghi, streghe draghi e tutte le altre creature mistiche. Il re Uther Pendragon, non potendo avere un erede dalla moglie Ygraine, fece uso della magia della strega Nimueh, per riuscire a realizzare il suo desiderio. Per ristabilire gli equilibri del ciclo vitale nel mondo, la strega, alla nascita di Artù, prese la vita di Ygraine. Uther, accecato dal dolore e dalla rabbia, bandì l'uso della magia dal regno, dando inizio alla sua guerra contro la stregoneria chiamata la "Grande Epurazione", facendo uccidere tutti gli stregoni, le streghe e le creature magiche, eccetto l'ultimo drago rimasto Kilgharrah e le streghe Nimueh, Morgause e Morgana, quest'ultima figlia di Uther, avuta da una relazione extraconiugale, e sorellastra materna di Morgause. Merlino, un giovane ragazzo del villaggio di Eldor (al di fuori del regno di Camelot), vive tranquillamente nel suo villaggio senza mai imparare a usare i suoi poteri con incantesimi e parole magiche, essendo tanto potente da usare la magia anche senza formule magiche; un giorno però sua madre lo manda a Camelot affidandolo al saggio medico di corte, Gaius, affinché Merlino riceva uno scopo per i suoi doni durante la vita adempiendo al suo destino, quale che esso sia. A Camelot Merlino incontrerà il Grande Drago, ormai prigioniero di Uther Pendragon da vent'anni, il quale gli rivelerà che Merlino ha un grande destino che consiste nel proteggere e servire il principe Artù, cosicché un giorno Artù possa diventare re e fondare il regno di Albion. Spetterà quindi a Merlino il compito di proteggere Artù dai molti nemici di Camelot e del re Uther Pendragon, ma il giovane mago dovrà sempre cercare di tenere nascosti i suoi poteri in quanto Uther, avendo bandito la magia dal regno, condanna a morte chiunque la possieda, indipendentemente dall'uso che ne faccia.
