DESCRIPTION

It's 1955. Frank and April Wheeler, in the seventh year of their marriage, have fallen into a life that appears to most as being perfect. They live in the Connecticut suburbs with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job while April stays at home as a housewife. But they're not happy. April has forgone her dream of becoming an actress, and Frank hates his job - one where he places little effort - although he has never figured out what his passion in life is. One day, April suggests that they move to Paris - a city where Frank visited during the war and loved, but where April has never been - as a means to rejuvenate their life. April's plan: she would be the breadwinner, getting a lucrative secretarial job for one of the major international organizations, while Frank would have free time to find himself and whatever his passion. Initially skeptical, Frank ultimately agrees to April's plan. When circumstances change around the Wheelers, April decides she will do whatever she has to to get herself out of her unhappy existence.

Revolutionary Road è un film del 2008 diretto da Sam Mendes, basato sull’omonimo romanzo di Richard Yates. I protagonisti della vicenda sono Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) e April (Kate Winslet) Wheeler, icona della perfetta famiglia degli anni Cinquanta, che trascorrono la propria esistenza a Revolutionary Road, nel Connecticut. Ma la realtà è ben diversa dall’apparenza. April, infatti, è una donna insoddisfatta che incolpa il marito di averla segregata in uno squallido sobborgo, mentre Frank è un uomo adultero, profondamente frustrato dal suo tedioso lavoro alla Noxt & Co. Nonostante le continue e violente sfuriate, nessuno dei vicini sembra intuire la tensione tra i Wheeler, eccezione fatta per John Givings (Michael Shannon), figlio della vicina Helen Givings (Kathy Bates), affetto da turbe psichiche.

La critica situazione del matrimonio potrebbe essere sanata dall'iniziativa di April, che ricorda al marito gli anni felici in cui i due sognavano di trasferirsi a Parigi e insiste per realizzare finalmente il loro sogno. Frank, inizialmente, asseconda il desiderio di sua moglie per poi finire con l’essere persuaso dalla promessa di una promozione, che potrebbe portare molti benefici economici. April non sopporta che Frank preferisca questa monotona vita al salto nel buio che potrebbe condurli alla felicità. La donna, inoltre, è profondamente scossa dalla scoperta di essere nuovamente incinta. Mentre l’eccentrico John rivela di aver intuito la verità amara che si cela dietro ai ruoli pubblici, ben interpretati dai Wheeler, April è sull'orlo della disperazione. La donna, nonostante la ferma opposizione di Frank, opterà per una scelta azzardata che, tuttavia, potrebbe impedirle di realizzare il sogno di vivere e sentire davvero…
