(2022) Daryl Hall & John Oates - Marigold Sky [Expanded Edition]
Review: BMG’s reissue of Daryl Hall & John Oates’ 1997 album ‘Marigold Sky’ adds three bonus tracks: the radio edit of “Romeo Is Bleeding,” the remix of “Hold on to Yourself,” and the Hot Mix of “The Sky Is Falling.” Daryl Hall and John Oates’ 1997 album Marigold Sky marked the duo’s first album away from the major label machine. Following tenures on Atlantic, RCA, and Arista, the phenomenally successful pair aligned with BMG-distributed Push Records for their first “indie” release. Seven years had passed since the release of their final Arista album, Change of Season, and the passage of time was reflected on the cover. The reflective image adorning Marigold Sky was a far cry from the bolder, more colorful imagery of their previous albums and indeed, the record emphasized remarkable songwriting, alluring grooves, soulful vocals, impeccable musicianship, and compelling craft. Executive produced by Daryl Hall and primarily produced by Hall and David Bellochio, Marigold Sky was the duo’s fifteenth studio album. It featured Hall and Oates’ longtime bassist T-Bone Wolk as well as longtime collaborators including saxophonist Charlie DeChant and engineer Peter Moshay (both of whom are still involved with Hall and Oates today) and guitarist Paul Pesco. Dave Stewart (with whom Hall is currently collaborating on solo music) added guitar on the single “Romeo Is Bleeding” as well as on “Love Out Loud.” Hall and/or Oates co-wrote every track on the album, with Average White Band’s Alan Gorrie contributing lyrics to numerous songs. Hall and Oates penned the shimmering soul ballad “Promise Ain’t Enough” with Dwayne O’Brien and Porter Howell, and the track reached the top ten of the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart during its 30-week stay. “Promise” additionally charted internationally including in Canada and the Netherlands. “I look at Marigold Sky as the lost Hall and Oates album,” comments Daryl Hall in the press release. “The fans have been asking me for years about it. I’m really proud of these songs and happy to see that it’s getting a global re-release.” John Oates notes, “I am really pleased that Marigold Sky is finally becoming available around the world. It’s a very unique and cool album, and I hope old and new fans really enjoy it.” BMG’s upcoming CD adds three bonus tracks: the radio edit of “Romeo Is Bleeding,” the remix of “Hold on to Yourself,” and the Hot Mix of “The Sky Is Falling.” The radio edits of “Promise Ain’t Enough” (shortening the track to 4:15 from 5:48) and “Throw the Roses Away” (4:26 vs. the album version’s 5:40) didn’t make the cut, along with an unplugged “Promise Ain’t Enough” issued overseas, a handful of live versions (most of which were also featured on the 1998 promotional-only CD Live!) and an array of dance/club mixes of “Hold on to Yourself” issued at the time
