Rufus Muller - tenor

Christopher Wilson - lute

Few things are as iconic of the English renaissance as the lute song,

and the quintessential lute songs are Dowland's. Though his music

often takes a melancholy tone (Dowland's life was an unhappy one), it

is bursting with energy and creativity, as in the runaway imagery and

ironically upbeat tone of "Come again, sweet love doth now invite" and

the plantive galliard dance rhythms of "Now, o now, I needs must

part".

Muller and Wilson deliver a performance that is an easy candidate for

a reference recording of these songs. Far more listenable than the

countertenors or female vocalists often employed in lute songs, Muller

nonetheless gives energy and life to the music.
