Colored Balls formed in Brisbane following the breakup of The Purple Hearts. In 1971, the already well-known guitarist, the star of all Australian club scenes - Lobby Loyde (née John Baslington Lyde) joined the group. Prior to that, he had already played both solo and in the bands The Purple Hearts, Wild Cherries, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs. Lobby Loyde immediately took the leading position - his status as a musician by that time did not imply anything else. America had Hendrix, Britain had Clapton, Beck and Page, and Australia had John Baslington Lyde, aka Lobby Loyd, the most uncompromising ax in any hemisphere. More than anyone else, Lobby helped create the Australian guitar sound long before Angus Young or Billy Thorpe or The Angels or Rose Tattoo took over guitars. The lobby inspired Australian bands to come forward and play as loud and aggressive as possible. Modern musicians today are trying to copy his playing. His stage image became a household name: "Loyd played with a cigarette, forever stuck to his lower lip, and always seemed drunk or stoned ...". By 1972, he was already a 10-year veteran of the Australian rock scene, and formed The Colored Balls as a "revenge group" against the musical establishment. The result was unrestrained, real drive rock. Their songs were in some way like "The Groundhogs" or "Jeff Beck Group", and their energy can only be described as the wonderful predecessor of British punk - "Buzzcocks. They played almost everything - from rock and roll, boogie-woogie, blues rock, to psychedelics, hard rock, glam rock and even pop rock. They quickly gained popularity, including among skinheads, thanks to their reputation as a loud band, similar in style to The Aztecs, and extremely harsh performances, with sometimes explicit calls for violence coming from the stage. By August 1972, the lineup had completely changed and included Trevor Young on drums, Lobby on guitar, and John Miglans on bass. Their first single, "Liberate Rock", was released the same month. Colored Balls recorded material for Rock Your Ass Off in late 1972, but it was not released until May 1976, when it finally saw the light of day as The First Supper Last, Or Scenes We Didn't Get To See "on the independent Rainbird label. In January 1973, Colored Balls teamed up with guest vocalists Billy Thorpe and Leo De Castro at the Sunbury Pop Festival, and their performance was released in November as the track Help Me / Rock Me Baby on the Summer Jam live album. The album also includes a downhole version of the composition "G.O.D." (Guitar Overdose). Aside from their first recorded but unreleased album, Rock Your Ass Off, until 1976, their debut studio album is Ball Power, which was released in December 1973. The album peaked at # 13 on the Go-Set Top 20 Albums Chart. Their second album, Heavy Metal Kid, spawned the hit Love You Babe, which hit the Top 40 in June 1974. Colored Balls were heavily influenced by the wild-minded American MC5s and The Flamin ’Groovies, plus the band became almost the epitome of all the bad stuff in 1970s Melbourne. As a result, the list of concert venues where they were invited to perform was greatly reduced, and media reports about the Hooligan antics of Lobby Loyd only added fuel to the fire. Unfortunately, the group was simply crushed by the press for only three years. Colored Balls disbanded in late 1974 and Loyd returned to solo work. He went to England, went after punk bands and found that they made exactly the same "rustle" as Colored Balls, only here they were in the yard, and their time has come ... Lobby Loyd died of lung cancer on April 21 2007 at the age of 65.
