Любопытно, что молодой Shannon в начале карьеры пел соул и блюз только по вечерам, а днем работал в компании, занимающейся аппаратным обеспечением или "железом", как у нас иногда говорят. Основную музыкальную карьеру он начал, когда обеспечил себе место в ансамбле поддержки Shirley Brown. В 1993 году его собственная группа Preston Shannon Band играла на Long Beach Blues Festival. После того, как его заметили ведущим собственной группы в клубах Мемфиса на Бил-Стрит, он подписал контракт с дочерней компанией Rounder Records, Bullseye Blues, и выпустил свой дебютный сольный альбом "Break The Ice" в 1994 году.
