DESCRIPTION

Stuck as the last of six children at home with an overbearing Italian mother, the only child still unmarried, 34 year old socially awkward Bronx butcher Marty faces middle age with no prospects of marriage, and he faces permanent bachelorhood. But when he is goaded by his mother into going to the Stardust Ballroom one Saturday night, Marty unexpectedly meets Clara, a lonely teacher. Suddenly, Marty's future seems bright.

Marty is a 34-year-old butcher whose Italian family is constantly after him to get married. He meets plain-looking schoolteacher Clara. They are both lonely, unglamorous people who have resigned themselves to their unloved lives. But they manage, in time, to grope their way to love.

Marty è conosciuto in tutto il quartiere come un bravo ragazzo, educato, generoso e disponibile con tutti, ma che vive con crescente preoccupazione il suo stato di scapolo. Nelle prime scene del film due clienti della sua macelleria, che hanno saputo del recente matrimonio di un suo fratello, insistono perché Marty prenda moglie. Marty ha un carattere timido, ha cercato molte volte di approcciarsi con le ragazze, ma pur essendo simpatico la sua stazza pesante gli ha precluso successi (lui stesso afferma di non essere piacevole per le ragazze).
