Some background for this project: Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favorite TV series, and arguably my single favorite work of art. Last year, when I recommended it to a Japanese-speaking friend, he brought to my attention that the official translation (from Central Park Media, which is the one circulated in almost every release of this show) is bad. I decided to look into how much Nozomi Entertainment improved it with their recent BD release, which advertised an updated script. I finally got around to buying the series on Blu-ray and rewatched my favorite anime yet again. The answer was they kind of improved some things, but nowhere near enough. There are glaring inaccuracies and errors in Central Park Media's script that persist in Nozomi Entertainment's, which primarily just makes corrections to the songs (and it's still not very thorough at correcting them), and arguably makes some lines worse. Thus began this project, which initially just consisted of restyling and editing the subs, correcting any errors I was notified of. Then, I found the Utena Translation Project text scripts and began cross-referencing those (though I'd be shit outta luck for the movie), and then Cala graciously offered to TLC (and along the way made very welcome improvements to the editing) and dragged the retired CL3 along for the ride. We also got help from bluesun, who very generously helped us solve the riddles of the duel songs, and helped us hash out other difficult lines. Now, after a year's worth of work, here we have the Student Council Arc of Revolutionary Girl Utena! This release boasts a much more accurate and thoroughly researched translation. Though I am a complete newbie at typesetting, I put a lot of work into typesetting as much on-screen text as I could and tried to make it look as natural as I could. A big thank you to The0x539 for showing me the ropes with Mocha! If anyone skilled at typesetting wants to help with later batches, please let me know.
We plan to release the Black Rose Arc (episodes 14-24) next, presumably around a year from now, and then we will split the Apocalypse Arc into two parts: episodes 25-33, and 34-39. Then, lastly, we intend to release the movie. I actually worked on the movie before most of this cour, but we want to get the TV series out first. We will be batching everything into one torrent at the end, with corrections (feedback is welcome!) and consistency changes should we opt to handle recurring lines differently later on.
This release includes two sub tracks: default "eng" with no honorifics (Master Utena, Madam Nanami), and "enm" with honorifics (Utena-sama, Nanami-san). Please set your media player preferences accordingly. Honorifics are adapted as appropriate in the default track. For instance, Anthy's "Utena-sama" is translated as "Master Utena", while Wakaba's is adapted as "Utena, my love" or a similar, contextually appropriate translation. Honorifics such as "-kun" or "-senpai" are adapted wherever possible (honorifics track: Tenjou Utena-kun; default track: my dear Tenjou Utena) but left out when there's no good way to adapt them (honorifics track: Tenjou-senpai; default track: Tenjou). A couple of lines are consequently translated a little differently between the two sub tracks.
