Von Oven P. Implementing VMware Dynamic Environment Manager.2022
Whether you deploy and manage a physical desktop environment or a virtual desktop machine environment, managing the end user environment is the key to delivering a great end user experience. This is where the user environment management solutions are key, particularly so, if your organization is looking to deploy a truly stateless desktop environment. End users need to have their applications, data and personal settings delivered to them no matter where they log in from in order to be productive and perform their job roles. When they login, they expect to see all the correct icons displayed on the desktop for the applications they use, their favorite printer connected, and above all, they have access to their documents, data and files. You also need to think of the administrators in the IT team as the end users as well. It’s just another role within the organization. Having a solution that allows them to simplify end user management using a centralized solution frees them up to work on more strategic projects while at the same time providing an enhanced end user experience. IT admins can centrally manage end user settings and access to applications, which the printer users can access along with any other policy and security-based settings. VMware Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM), previously known as VMware User Environment Manager (UEM) was added to the Horizon portfolio in February 2015 when VMware acquired a Dutch company called Immidio. Originally, Immidio was a software company that created products that were designed to assist their consultants working out in the field when it came to managing end user environments. It soon became a product rather than an internally developed consultancy tool. VMware DEM provides advanced features and functionality over using standard group policy. One of the key differences that is instantly noticeable is that DEM is managed via a central management console rather than using the AD GPO editor. It not only works across virtual desktop machines, but also physical PCs and cloud-based Windows desktop environments or DaaS. It’s all about managing the end users environment. The primary goal of this book is to provide information and skills that are necessary to deploy VMware Dynamic Environment Manager in your own environment. This book contains real-life examples that will show you how to install, configure and manage VMware DEM, as well as how it integrates into other VMware solution. Over the 13 chapters in this book, you will learn the following: Chapter 1 introduces the concept of user environment management or user profiles as it was previously more commonly known, what user profiles are and what they are used for. Chapter 2 discusses the VMware DEM in more detail covering its architecture and how it works. Chapter 3 walks you through the installation process to get VMware DEM installed and running within your environment using real screenshots as the installation is completed. As a part of the installation, this chapter also discusses the prerequisites and other infrastructure requirements. Chapter 4 deals with the second part of the installation. Now that the DEM software is installed, there are a number of initial configuration tasks that need to be completed. This chapter will walk you through these steps using actual screenshots as you work through the configuration. Chapter 5 demonstrates the features and functionality of DEM. The focus of this chapter is firstly to familiarize the management console and then to look at the desktop personalization features. Chapter 6 describes the next key set of features to manage the user environment. Chapter 7 introduces the conditions set features that allows you to configure actions on the end user’s desktop when certain thresholds or events occur enabling a more dynamic end user experience based on the real-time working of the end user. Chapter 8 describes one of the additional features of DEM i.e., Application Migration. This is the process of taking an end user’s personal application setting and migrating that setting from one version of the application to a new version. Chapter 9 describes another feature of DEM i.e., Helpdesk Support Tool that allows you to troubleshoot profile issues. Chapter 10 focuses on some of the common issues that could be experienced and how to troubleshoot and solve them. Chapter 11 describes the process of upgrading VMware DEM to a newer version. Chapter 12 focuses on an additional application that comes as a part of the DEM solution which is the DEM SyncTool. The DEM SyncTool is enabled to manage remote users who don’t have a reliable or fast internet connection or need to work offline using a laptop or mobile device. Chapter 13 focuses on the last of the additional applications that come as a part of the DEM solution which is the Application Profiler. This feature allows you to create an application profile capturing specific application settings and saving them as a config file
