A talented student(Jimmy Wang Yu)is resented by the master's daughter(Chiao Chiao), so she challenges him to a duel. Wang Yu refuses to fight, but Chiao Chiao's rage cannot be contained, and she ends up cutting off his arm. The now crippled swordsman is nursed back to health by a peasant farmer, and seems poised to settle into a new life, but is called back to his school when his master is attacked. Unable to defeat the villains at first, Wang Yu returns to learn a devastating one-armed style before taking his revenge.
One Armed Swordsman is undoubtedly one of the most influential Hong Kong movies of all time. During this period, Shaw Bros. was losing a lot of business to Japanese swordplay films, and so they made a decision to make "harder" movies, and Chang Cheh was largely the spearhead of this movement. Though he had started to develop his formula with a couple of previous films, One Armed Swordsman was the one that cemented it, and created the template for countless kung fu movies to come. All of the classic elements are here, from the revenge plot to violent, weapons-based combat to a stoic and powerful anti-hero. The movie was a huge success upon its' release, and spawned a series of sequels and outright knockoffs, such as
One Armed Swordswoman. One Armed Swordsman's influence continued into the modern period of Hong Kong movies, with films like Tsui Hark's The Blade.
Though it might seem dated by today's standards, One Armed Swordsman still provides some excitement for the modern viewer, mostly through Jimmy Wang Yu's performance. Though he was never formally trained in martial arts(Wang Yu was a champion water polo playe, this casting also heralded a trend, as it showed that "real" martial artists could be replaced by more general actors), Wang Yu manages to create an interesting and powerful hero that still captivates audiences to this day. Some elements of One Armed Swordsman might come off as almost amateurish and slow-moving, but one must keep in mind that the modern kung fu movie was in its' infancy at this point. So, no, you won't get guys flying around or gushes of blood with
One Armed Swordsman, but you will get a solid story with some excellent acting, something which many modern action films, even with their huge budgets and greater techincal know-how can never match.

Return of the One-Armed Swordsman, also known as One-Armed Swordsman Return, is a 1969 Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Chang Cheh and produced by the Shaw Brothers Studio. The film is a sequel to the 1967 film One-Armed Swordsman, with Jimmy Wang and Lisa Chiao Chiao reprising their roles.
The eponymous character, played by Jimmy Wang, has hung up his signature broken sword and is living peacefully with his wife. However, a band of tyrannical sword masters take over the country, using their own signature styles and unique weapons to conquer all the sword fighting schools. They capture all the masters and teachers of the schools and deliver an ultimatum: all the students must cut off their sword arms and surrender the severed limbs to the evil warlords, or the students' beloved teachers will all die. The students turn to the legendary One-Armed Swordsman, who is at first reluctant but is convinced when a student actually does sacrificially chop his own arm off when he refuses to help.
The One-Armed Swordsman must contend with the unique styles and weapons of the warlords, which is what makes the movie. Winged Blade(or Flying Dragon in another translation dub) and his henchmen are able to jump or glide, a power that One-Arm foils by scattering calthrops where they land. Whirling Blade and his henchmen wield and throw two bladed bucklers,
which return to them like Captain America's shield. Thunder Blade's sword both emits a smoke screen and is actually a shotgun. Thousand Blade(or One Thousand Fingers) has long false fingernail blades that she can throw. And Unseen Blade(the Unseen) first appears to have an invisible sword, then suddenly has a sword that can unexpectedly grow longer. In the end the One-Armed Swordsman defeats the warlords and their armies, but by that time all of the sword fighting students who were helping him are dead. He leaves the last evil swords master, Unseen, to be chopped into chutney by the vengeful freed masters and teachers of the schools, and goes back to his wife.

The New One-Armed Swordsman, also known as Triple Irons, is a 1971 Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Chang Cheh and produced by the Shaw Brothers Studio, starring David Chiang. Chiang replaced Jimmy Wang, the star of the two preceding films in the series, The One-Armed Swordsman and Return of the One-Armed Swordsman. The film features Chang Cheh's usual brand of violent swordplay and bloody effects.
It is not strictly a sequel as it just features another one-armed swordsman, not any of the characters from the previous film. The film opens with a standoff between young Lei Li (David Chiang) and warlord Lung (Ku Feng), in which Lei agrees to have his arm cut off if he loses. Lei loses and the action picks up a few years later when the depressed and degraded cripple works as a put-upon waiter, shyly flirting with the restaurant owner's daughter (Ching Li). Since he has renounced swordplay, Lei must suffer the taunts of the patrons who mock his handicap. One night, he and the daughter are defended from a couple of Lung's drunken thugs by fighter Fang (Ti Lung). Fang and Lei develop a friendship that revolves around swordplay and complaining about Lung's corrupt and violent leadership.
Fang is tricked into traveling to a mountaintop fortress to confront Lung and is gruesomely killed by the fighters. Lei picks up his sword once more to take on Lung and his henchmen. The film features a number of fight sequences, skillfully hotographed by Kung Mu-to and choreographed by Lau Kar-leung and Tong Gaai, most notably the wire work in the climatic battle on a bridge and in the incorporation of Lung's three-section staff.

Zatoichi and the One-Armed Swordsman is a Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Chinese film director Hsu Tseng Hung and Japanese film director Kimiyoshi Yasuda. Film stars Jimmy Wang Yu as the "One-Armed Swordsman" Wang Gang and Katsu Shintaroh as the blind masseur Zatoichi. This film is a crossover of the One-Armed Swordsman and Zatoichi film series.
By 1970, Jimmy Wang Yu was embroiled in some contractual disputes with Shaw Brothers, the studio that released One Armed Swordsman and its sequel, so that may explain why the character in Zatoichi meets the One Armed Swordsman is named “Wang Kang” instead of “Fang Kang.” Whatever the reason, the name is different here, although ostensibly, it is more or less the same character. After years of an existence filled with seemingly unending violence and bloodshed, Wang Kang has decided to start a new life in Japan. While travelling to a temple to meet an old friend, Wang befriends a Chinese
married couple and their young son who have already made a home for themselves in Japan, despite being foreigners.
Things turn ugly when they cross paths with an official procession of a local Japanese lord. Unaccustomed to Japanese laws, the Chinese couple’s son, Shaolong, accidentally does something to offend the powers-that-be. Unfortunately for him, the punishment doesn’t quite fit the crime, as the young boy is almost killed right on the spot for his “dishonorable” behavior. Luckily for the little boy, Wang is there to save the day, slicing and dicing a few bloodthirsty samurai in the process. Shockingly, the Japanese officials use Wang’s interference as an excuse to go ahead and massacre every man, woman,
and child in sight, including the friendly Chinese couple. As a foreigner from China, Wang turns out to be the perfect scapegoat for the bad guys.
As Wang Kang battles off hordes of Japanese swordsman all throughout the countryside, Shaolong wanders off and has a fortuitous meeting with Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu). The ever-sympathetic blind masseuse immediately takes the lost child under his wing. Eventually, Wang Kang joins them, and the ragtag trio finds refuge outside town with a family that was actually present at the massacre and knows that Wang Kang is completely innocent. Hoping to get to the bottom of things, Zatoichi heads into town, but things go from bad to worse. Not only are the lives of Wang and Shaolong soon endangered, but so too
are those of the kindly family members who gave them all shelter in the first place. Even worse, Zatoichi himself gets framed for the terrible misfortune that ultimately befalls his newfound comrades, which results in the much-awaited confrontation with Wang Kang, who mistakenly believes the masseur to be nothing more than an opportunistic traitor. With the Japanese-speaking Zatoichi unable to explain the truth to the Chinese language-only Wang Kang, a final, fatal showdown is inevitable – with surprising results.

This arty flick takes place in bizarre world where everyone wears suits and long coats but no one has guns. Instead, they battle with swords like the wuxia of old. Daniel Lee directed this decidely offbeat take on the swordsman genre. His story concerns a young man(Wu Xing-Guo) who finds himself caught up in a twenty year-old grudge between his father(David Chiang) and his adopted stepfather(Norman Tsui), who took Wu from his family years ago. Making things worse is his best friend(Jack Gao), who's in love with his girl(Charlie Young), and tries to take her forcibly.
The story itself is composed of your standard wuxia plot devices, but the new setting and cool cinematography make the film a worthy experience. The sword-fighting sequences are shot with style to spare, sometimes employing the now common smudge-slow-mo seen in Ashes of Time. The presence of old school actors Damian Lau, Norman Tsui and David Chiang
makes for an interesting counterpoint to the updated setting and younger actors. This is an interesting and oddly disturbing film that succeeds at being entertaining and involving, though the overall tone of the film is a bit cold. Some might find the changes to the usual formula jarring, but the movie is still worth checking out for an interesting twist on an established genre.

This film is a spin-off of the "One Armed" series started by the great Chang Cheh in 1967 with One Armed Swordsman. Starring Jimmy Wang Yu, this film is produced by Shen Hsiao-Yin, with martial arts supervision by the acrobatic Wang Yu. This time around Jimmy doesn't do much sword-play, relying instead on a one armed fist style to defeat his opponents. He is seeking revenge against disciples of Chu Chiu-Tzu who killed his family and cut off his arm.
The script by Yao Chin-Kang keeps things lively and moving along. All the usual great stuff is present here; Double-crosses, revenge, trickery, double double-crosses, prostitutes and madams, "flying" kungfu, snappy dialogue between combatants.
The action starts off right away with Jimmy's character, Liu, challenging the first killer, Meng, on a bridge at night. This killing gets the Chu Party pretty pissed and the fun begins. There is a sequence involving a "chess" match with Meng's Uncle. Liu wins the chess match and defeats the Uncle, who commits suicide in disgrace for having lost a match to a one-armed fighter. The suicide sets up a very cool plot twist in the final scenes. Liu continues his quest, meeting and beating his foes as he
goes on his way.
