### Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä - Enthusiast's Collected Edition
*The best picture quality, Dual audio + commentary & A plethora of excellent subtitles*
There are two contenders for the best version of this movie on Bluray: The original JP Bluray and the newer JP Bluray on the Hayao Miyazaki Collection box. For this release I've used the original JPBD, as I vastly prefer the colours and brightness levels on it. The box BD has an overly uniform blue/dim tint compared to the original BD, and thus some darker colours on it are harder to differentiate from each other, which makes it look like they're all blended together. It also feels "underlit" somehow, like there's always a shadow on everyone's face. The original on the other hand has a great, varied color palette! There might be a bit too much red in some shots, but overall it is the superior one to my eyes. From what I've read though, the newer Bluray was scanned at 6K, so maybe a true 4K edition in the future? (with better colours hopefully!) One can hope...

Until then, enjoy this collected edition, for which I've racked up many different subtitles and all the main audio tracks made for Nausicaä. The most interesting track is definitely keyframe animator Hideaki Anno's and assistant director Kazuyoshi Katayama's commentary from the UKBD. They talk about a lot of cool behind-the-scenes stuff, their own paths leading up to working on the film and how some shots in the movie were constructed during the busy production. You could also have a drinking game where you take a shot every time Anno comments on how cute Teto is.
This is also a unique release of mine regarding the video, since it's the first one that has 2 different video streams in the same .mkv file. The first, default one is the normal movie stream and the other is a storyboard only version. The name is kinda self-explanatory, but yes, it basically shows the storyboard drawings made by Hayao Miyazaki instead of the movie. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're interested. To change to the storyboard stream on MPC-HC, right click anywhere on the viewable screen once you've opened the .mkv file, then click on "Video Track" and choose the storyboard stream [like so](https://i.imgur.com/o9pAZ2s.png). Switching to the other video stream shouldn't hopefully be too different on other players.
For the subtitles we have some nicely styled ones with an original translation by nedragrevev as the default option. Here are his notes:
"
*• Translation: My own.*
*Spent much, much time translating the actual JP and then rendering it into natural English. I'm sure there's room for improvement but it's much improved from the official stuff. Dub referenced in some cases, so some line are either copied from the dub or a modified version of them. It's not as if you'll see the movie in a different light with these subs, but they should improve the viewing experience compared to the official subs.*
*• Timing:*
*Timed to present the best viewing experience. I would have liked some lines to have more onscreen time but it should be ok.*
*• Typesetting:
Only 5 signs needed typesetting from memory. Motion tracked to follow the screen jitter.* *I didn't see the purpose of TS'ing the OP & ED credits. If you ever wondered what the WWF screen and blue screen at the beginning said, those have been translated and TS. Nothing important.*
*• Songs: N/A*
"
If you'd rather watch the movie with the official subtitles, you can choose Coalgirls', THORA's or REVO's, which I believe all use an overall same official translation.
