Overview
RockXP is a software utility designed to help users who have a tendency of misplacing vital account details and info regarding their Microsoft OS and additional applications by retrieving the passwords quick and painless. The nature of RockXP will make certain anti-virus programs perceive it as malicious software, as its design resembles key-loggers and rootkits. However, the program is a harmless application and it does not send the data recovered to any third party unless, of course, the kit you have downloaded is infected. Therefore, if you never want to worry about forgetting passwords, serial numbers or activation details, you should consider downloading RockXP.
Installation
The RockXP utility is lightweight and it will only occupy approximately 0.74 megabytes from your hard drive. Although it is freeware, this application is not supported by ads, so you will not be prompted to install other software utilities as well. There are no minimum system requirements and even the oldest system can support RockXP, providing the computer is using the Windows XP 32 bit or 64 bit operating system. Thanks to its reduced size, the program can be installed and uninstalled quickly.
Interface
The interface of the RockXP is minimalistic, but all the features you could expect from this type of software are present and easy to access. The upper section of the window contains the buttons Welcome, Windows Key, Internet Access, System’s Passwords, Generate Password and About, each of them fully operational and ready to help you retrieve the pass codes you are looking for. On the right side, you can notice a feature that enables you to create a backup of your passwords in an encoded file, while in the lower left side you have the option of changing your current security codes, providing you have already retrieved the old ones. In order to retrieve the passwords you are looking for, you will need to click on the appropriate section and scan your system. Once the codes are retrieved, you will be able to check their validity via the RockXP application without having to enter them yourself.
Pros
RockXP is definitely a convenient application to have around, especially if you are not the most organized person in the world. However, even with a decent organization system, it can happen that you misplace or forget critical data and you have to go through a painful retrieval process that implies confirming your identity several times. Due to the constantly increasing numbers of identity thefts reported each year, software developer will always be reluctant to let you change the password to your account without solid proof. On the other hand, RockXP will simply scan your system and provide you all the critical details regarding accounts, software utilities or your key code for your Windows XP OS. Although the application has imbedded features that can help you retrieve the password for your internet connection, your instant messenger, your browser of choice and your Windows, that is not all. The latest versions of RockXP enable you to backup your codes in an encrypted files which you only you can access anytime, for more convenience.
Cons
Due to its nature, RockXP will be accounted as malicious software by several antivirus software utilities. However, although the program is in no way a malicious application in itself, every so often you will come across by install kits that are infected. The best way to ensure that you have a clean installation kit is to download the program from reputable websites (see the antivirus report from us). Afterwards, you should scan it with your antivirus software and compare the results with the false positive files listed for the application.
Alternatives
As an alternative to RockXP, customers can try out Product Key Explorer as well, but the features and limitations of the two applications are pretty similar and the customer and expert rating is the same. Moreover, the Product Key Explorer tends to occupy more space and it will not run on systems with 32 megabytes of ram or less.
Conclusion
Software utilities that have access to the passwords and serial numbers on your computer should be treated with the utmost care. RockXP is a fairly decent application, although antivirus software tools usually seem to detect a false positive in two of its files. However, keep in mind that you should not exclude the possibility that the install kit you have downloaded is infected when the antivirus pops up a warning regarding the program.
