When a deadly virus escapes from a government research facility, few prove to be immune to its effects. With symptoms similar to the flu, those who come into contact with it quickly die. One survivor is Stu Redmond, a gas station attendant from Texas, who suffers no ill effects whatsoever. Kept in a medical research facility in Vermont, doctors try to determine why he is still alive. Others that also survive include Frannie Goldsmith who lives with her dad; Nick Andros, a deaf-mute; a rock musician, Larry Underwood; and Lloyd Henreid, in jail for murder. Survivors begin to have dreams, either about an old Afican-American woman, Mother Abigail, or a much scarier evil man.

DESCRIPTION
When a government-run lab accidentally lets loose a deadly virus, most of the population of the world is wiped out. Survivors begin having dreams about two figures: a mystical old woman, or a foreboding, scary man. As the story tracks various people, we begin to realize that the two figures exemplify basic forces of good and evil, and the stage is set for a final confrontation between the representatives of each.
Non poteva esserci momento migliore (o peggiore, a seconda dei punti di vista) per l’arrivo di The Stand. La serie, disponibile dal 3 gennaio su StarzPlay, sembra che sia stata concepita dopo l’arrivo della pandemia. Ma è solo una coincidenza. Intanto perché il romanzo di Stephen King, dalla quale è tratta, è uscito oltre 40 anni fa, nel 1978. In secondo luogo, perché la prima miniserie ispirata al racconto apocalittico di King risale al 1994. Allora è stata trasmessa sul canale Abc e, tra gli attori, c’erano Gary Sinise nel ruolo del protagonista Stu Redman, Rob Lowe e, soprattutto, una lista di apparizioni-cameo notevoli, da John Landis a Kathy Bates, oltre allo stesso Stephen King. Infine, la serie in streaming su StarzPlay è stata finita nel marzo del 2020, pochi giorni prima che i set chiudessero per l’arrivo della pandemia.
Ma veniamo alla storia. Una super influenza che non può non ricordare il Covid, ma con un tasso di mortalità superiore al 99 per cento (e sintomi parecchio repellenti a base di rilascio di muco marroncino e un abnorme gonfiore del collo), ha quasi sterminato l’intera popolazione mondiale. Per la gioia dei complottisti, il virus della storia è stato creato in laboratorio con l’idea di farne un’arma biologica ma è stato accidentalmente rilasciato all’esterno. Il paziente 1 o super spreader che darà il via al contagio è un agente della sicurezza, che fugge dal laboratorio e viaggia in auto con moglie e figlio dalla California al Texas, fino a schiantarsi in una stazione di servizio e infettare tutti quelli che accorrono in suo aiuto.
Stephen King (lo ha raccontato lui stesso) con il romanzo The Stand si era ripromesso di scrivere una sorta di Il Signore degli anelli in versione contemporanea. E questo spiega la parte fantasy della storia, ovvero le due entità che, inizialmente, appaiono in sogno ai sopravvissuti. Madre Abagail (interpretata da Whoopi Goldberg), che invita il suo gruppo di superstiti a raggiungerla in una fattoria in Nebraska e l’oscuro Randall Flagg (l’attore Alexander Skarsgård) che raduna i suoi devoti a Las Vegas (che, per King, dovrebbe rappresentare un equivalente della Terra di Mordor).
