Core FTP Server 1.2.411 Editor's review
Overview
Core FTP Server is a rather simple application with a great deal of support features installed that enables anyone to transfer files via secure protocols and. Whilst Core FTP Server can be acquired as freeware, it is important to note that purchasing the paid version will enable users to remove some limitations associated with it. However, for less complex file storing and transfer needs, the free edition of Core FTP Server will do just fine. It is also important to note that in addition to data sharing, this application enables a lot of control options over the certificate authentication, the level of access and a great deal more.
Installation
Core FTP Server is only compatible with Windows 98 and above operating systems. In the first window of the installation screen, users will be able to read that the manufacturer does not assume any responsibility in the event that data is lost during the transfer or storage and that the warranty is strictly associated with the paid edition. However, extremely few complaints have been registered on these types of issues, so the risk level of using the freeware version is minimal. Once you have agreed to this, you will be able to select the components of the application you want to install and whether you would like a desktop and start menu shortcut, as well as specify the path for the files of the Core FTP Server. As a side note, installing the Core FTP Server lasts a couple of seconds and occupies 2.5MB on your hard drive.
Interface
As you would expect from the size and nature of this application, the interface of the Core FTP Server is rather simple and minimalistic in design. However, whilst it does not have any special design features worth mentioning, intermediate to advanced users will find that using the main functions is intuitive, as the buttons are conveniently located in the upper section. In essence, the main window of the Core FTP Server is split into three subsections. The superior subsection provides access to the Start, Setup, Access Rules, Start Service, Register and Quit functions. Furthermore, in the middle section, Core FTP Server displays the currently active servers and their associated features. Lastly, in the lower section users are displayed a log of the activity of the selected server.
However, the main window is just the tip of the iceberg, as the setup menu conveys access to complex server setup features, access levels, permissions, certificates and a great deal more. If you have at least the basic knowhow on how to operate FTP servers, then Core FTP Server should not pose a challenge to you.
Pros
Users that are concerned with the security of data during transfer can put their mind at ease, as Core FTP Server supports SFTP, SSL and HTTPS protocols. However, the transfers will occur with maximum efficiency, because speed will not be affected by the extra security of the protocols. In addition, you will be happy to know that this utility enables you to relocate data between two websites and setup the bandwidth you want to allocate for the each one. At the same time, the data transportation processes can be paused, stopped and restarted whenever you please and it will resume from the very same point if it was interrupted by a failed connection. At the same time, the files can be masked using a wildcard system, for improved protection. As far as browser integration is concerned, the Core FTP Server application is able to perform this task with all the commonly used programs from Mozilla Firefox to Chrome and Internet Explorer and anything in between.
Cons
The free version of Core FTP Server does limit users to only three simultaneous domains and has a tendency of pestering you to upgrade it to its paid version.
Alternatives
If for some reason Core FTP Server is not your cup of tea, then you can also try out iPIG Secure Access VPN Server, Jscape Secure FTP Server (Win, Mac and Linux), InstantSync Secure FTPS/SFTP or FileZilla Server.
Conclusion
Although the Core FTP Server has some limitations in the free version, it does combine an impressive arsenal of features that recommend it amongst the top notch FTP and HTTP file transfer servers.
