Trama:
erry Mason (Matthew Rhys) è un quarantenne povero in canna, un veterano della Grande Guerra (la storia si svolge all’inizio degli anni Trenta) che dopo la separazione dalla moglie e dopo la morte dei genitori vive da solo nella fatiscente fattoria di famiglia non troppo lontano dalla città degli angeli e dei demoni, Los Angeles. Per mantenersi lavora (lavoricchia!) come investigatore privato insieme all’amico e collega Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham).
Quando un efferato delitto scuote la città e l’opinione pubblica, Perry viene contattato dall’amico di famiglia E.B. Jonathan (John Lithgow), noto avvocato un tempo di successo, ora sul viale del tramonto, per indagare sull’accaduto. In ballo, infatti, c’è la vita della sua cliente, Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin), accusata del rapimento e della morte del figlioletto Charlie. Completano il cast principale Juliet Rylance, che interpreta la perspicace Della Street, segretaria e socia di E.B. e amica di Mason; Chris Chalk, che interpreta Paul Drake, un poliziotto nero che si ritrova coinvolto nel caso su cui sta indagando il protagonista; Tatiana Maslany, che interpreta Sister Alice McKeegan, una predicatrice che dice di sentire la voce di Dio e che è il punto di riferimento di una congregazione religiosa famosa, influente e piena di segreti.
