GetGo Download Manager 4.8.1.1171.d3k Editor's review
Overview
Did you ever notice that there is a special software that you need to download and install in order to be able to get your hands on a video you like for each and every popular website? What if there was a software utility that can save you that trouble and allow you to download all your favorite videos? Thanks to its high support, the GetGo Download Manager is the perfect tool that allows you to download any file, music or video, from any website that embeds FLV flash videos.
The GetGo Download Manager enables you to operate batch downloads at an extremely high speed and allows you to schedule downloads by setting the time you want it to start and for how long it should download. In addition, its incorporated technology allows it to resume the download of the stopped or broken links and hence, you will no longer have to restart the download from the beginning whenever you launch the program.
Installation
The installation is simple and fast, so just follow the setup instructions. However, it seems that the newest version, the one that incorporates an Internet Explorer integration feature, will add an add-on to the IE browser. Other than that, it is important to note that it will not add anything else to your computer. In order to be able to use the program, you will need to have a TCP/IP internet connection, Windows 2000 or newer operating system, an Intel Pentium 4 processor of 1 GHz, 100 MB free space on your hard drive and a minimum of 256 RAM. Moreover, the application prefers that you have Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher installed on your computer.
Interface
The interface is sleek and stylish, so when you open this program for the first time you will be pleasantly surprised. In the left part of the interface there is a small window via which you can easily access all the important commands and see the files that are currently being downloaded, as well as the ones that failed to download, or that were stopped for whatever reason. It also shows the, pending, queued, scheduled and completed ones. In addition, you will also notice a history of your downloads for the last thirty days, as well as an organizer that allows you to place your files into the suited category when scrolling down that window.
In the upper left part of the interface, you have the options menu that enables a wide array of customizations. The entire lower part contains bandwidth usage in seconds, whilst just above it you will notice a preview window that allows you to take a look at the files you downloaded. The focal point of the GetGo Download Manager is the window that displays the list of your current downloads. It is important to note that you have the ability of making that window as small or as large as you see fit.
Pros
Considering the support for almost all FLV flash embedded video on websites and the wide array of customization options, it is surprising that this program is free. Unlike similar products, the main benefit of this application is that it does not start the downloading process of any chosen files from the beginning if you stop it for any reason. In addition, you can easily program it to start downloading on its own from any location and stop when the download is complete.
A further appreciated option is the security feature that allows you to shred the files that you erase from the computer directly from the GetGo Download Manager. Lastly, you can verify if the downloaded files contain any viruses or other malware, using your security suite and this application.
Cons
The main issue with GetGo Download Manager is that it only works with Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher and Mozilla Firefox. Moreover, users are unhappy with the fact that in the upper part of the interface it includes an Ask.com toolbar and search option.
Alternatives
A nice alternative to the GetGo Download Manager is the Orbit Downloader, a free download manager developed by Innoshock.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, if you use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox as your default browser, then you will definitely enjoy GetGo Download Manager.
