Information
------------------------------
The Big Red One, named for the insignia of the First Infantry Division, is the unsparing World War II saga of a handful of GIs battling their way from North Africa through Sicily, Omaha Beach and Belgium to the ultimate horror of the Nazi Death Camps.
Lee Marvin (The Dirty Dozen) is the sergeant, and the young actors portraying his squad include Mark Hamill (Star Wars) and Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds). Writer/director Samuel Fuller, one of the most influental filmmakers in Hollywood history, served in the Fighting First.
"The real glory of war", Samuel Fuller said. "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed US First Infantry in World War II, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not... until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/fimmaker Richard Schikel heads a reconstruction that adds 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled and, maybe, survived.
"The Real Glory: Reconstructing The Big Red One" is a documentary about the making of the reconstructed version of The Big Red One, beginning with key cast members sharing some hilarious anecdotes about the shoot and then moves on to survey the reconstruction process (i.e., editing, color correction, sound and scoring). Featuring Robert Carradine, Bobby Di Cicco, Kelly Ward, Mark Hamill, Perry Lang, Doug Werner, Ken Campbell, Joe Clark, Fuller's daughter Samantha Fuller, Richard Schickel, Reconstruction editor Bryan Mckenzie, several crew members, and period interviews with Fuller.
A Lorac Production for Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
