JEAN RHYS, born Ella Williams (1890-1979), was a West Indian novelist who earned acclaim for her early works set in the bohemian world of Europe in the 1920s and ’30s but who stopped writing for nearly three decades, until she wrote a wildly successful novel set in the West Indies. She was one of the twentieth century's foremost writers, a literary artist who made exquisite use of the raw material of her own life to create fiction of memorable resonance and poignancy.
Several early novels — POSTURES (1928), AFTER LEAVING MR. MACKENZIE (1931), VOYAGE IN THE DARK (1934), AND GOOD MORNING, MIDNIGHT (1939) — were written during the first part of her career. Ahead of their time in style and content, they were fully enjoyed by only a small audience and, after 1939, their author fell into almost thirty years of haunting misery and near oblivion. She wrote nothing more until the publication in 1966 of her masterpiece, WIDE SARGASSO SEA, written as a prequel to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, brought her the attention and acclaim of the literary world and was followed by the rediscovery of her earlier books. All five works are now compiled in the valuable one-volume edition of her COMPLETE NOVELS (1985).
Some of Rhys's most powerful writing is found in her rich, dark stories. Her fictional world is haunted by her own, painful memories: of cheap hotels and drab Parisian cafés; of devastating love affairs; of her childhood in Dominica; of drifting through European cities, always on the periphery and always perilously close to the abyss. Rendered in extraordinarily vivid, honest prose, Rhys's stories show her at the height of her literary powers. The COLLECTED SHORT STORIES (2017) includes all the stories from her three collections,"The Left Bank" (1927), "Tigers Are Better-Looking" (1968) and "Sleep It Off, Lady" (1976).
SMILE PLEASE (1979) is Rhys's bitter-sweet unfinished autobiography, covering her chequered early years in Dominica, England and Paris. Written in her old age, the celebrated author is still haunted by memories of her troubled past: her precarious jobs on chorus lines and relationships with unsuitable men, her enduring sense of isolation and her decision at last to become a writer. A posthumous compilation of her LETTERS (1984) spans the period from 1931 to 1966. Besides detailing events and relationships, the correspondence reveals Rhys's process of literary creation, as she discusses various works in progress.
