Cyberduck for Windows 4.1.2 Editor's review
Overview
Looking for a good FTP client? Cyberduck might just be the tool you need! Built with usability in mind, Cyberduck is a very useful tool that will allow you to connect to remote hosts. As a result, the downloading and uploading of your files will be achieved with relative ease! It is jam-packed with a nice set of features, and be warned, that within a short time of using it, you might become addicted to it. The tool is solid, freeware, and supports a multitude of FTP protocols. Let’s analyze its features in this quick article and see if Cyberduck has all of the features you need in your daily work.
Installation
A lightweight software product in nature, you will not have any problems during the installation process of Cyberduck. With a setup kit of just 12Mb in size, the installation is fast and smooth. As for the supported operating systems, you should be happy to find out that every OS from XP onwards is able to support Cyberduck - this includes the latest Windows 7. The tool comes with Bonjour, as you will need to install it for Cyberduck to properly function.
Interface
You should be happy to find out that you don’t have to be an advanced user in order to install and use Cyberduck. The interface is easy to use and pretty intuitive. All of the buttons and controls are placed for easy access and a quick navigation. It is also nicely designed and elegant and I’m sure that it will win you over in a matter of seconds.
Pros
As stated above, Cyberduck hosts a large number of features that make it one of the best FTP clients on the market. You can connect to FTP/TLS, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, as well as Amazon S3, Google Storage, Google Docs, Windows Azure and Rackspace Cloud Files. It also works with open cloud software from OpenStack and Eucalyptus. Once you connect to a certain server, then you can start using its plethora of features, such as editing the files present there, or distributing your content into a cloud. The content can be modified quickly thanks to the seamless integration with any external editor application. Thus, any text or binary file on the server can be easily edited. You can distribute your files using both Amazon CloudFront and RackSpace Limelight. They can be configured in a simple manner. Other useful features of Cyberduck include: excellent bookmarking, the management of Google Docs, fast browsing and performance and advanced SSH features.
Cons
Cyberduck treats WebDAV connections as FTP sites and alienates their initial point. It is a protocol that allows you to mount remote volumes and operate as if local. Let’s hope a future version will fix this aspect.
Alternatives
There is no shortage of FTP clients on the market. Some alternatives to Cyberduck include the following tools: Transmit, FireFTP, SmartFTP, WinSCP, and more.
Conclusion
All in all, you simply can’t go wrong with Cyberduck. Fast, feature packed and most importantly, user friendly, it is a tough product to beat.
