Family Tree Maker (FTM) has reached this ripe old age with this year?s 2011 version. After a reckless rewrite in 2008, which left out many valued features, last year saw FTM 2010 recover its crown. FTM 2011 takes that claim further with some useful new features, not least loading and running far faster than its predecessor.
Possibly the most intriguing new feature is Smart Story, a tool that let you write your family history as a traditional narrative. It lets you incorporate facts, sources, and notes you?ve already entered into your tree by simply dragging them into the story. That doesn?t sound like much, but those items stay linked to your data and when it changes, your Smart Story text changes too, so you don?t have to update it constantly as you refine your research. Smart Story text can be added to your ?book? reports (see below) but only as separate extra pages.
Smart Story exemplifies how family history software is increasingly introducing ways to improve the presentation of your family history. FTM 2011 has also added four more variations on fan charts, plus new backgrounds, borders, and fonts. Reports too, have been improved and in some cases made easier to understand. Other features include timelines, family group sheets; and photos and slideshows.
As before you can upload your family tree to Ancestry.co.uk, letting you share it, and the information contained with other users. Before uploading anything to Ancestry?s web pages, though, you should check that you?re happy with the terms and conditions, as this information becomes public. A new, free iPhone app lets you view yours and other?s information on the go ? handy if you?re out-and-about researching.
Of course, FTM 2011 has all the functionality of its predecessor, recording your research data and producing reports, charts and maps. There?s a good selection of charts and reports, including the Family Book feature ? which assembles a ?book? from your choice of trees, reports, and placeholders, along with a Table of Contents and Index. It will also search Ancestry?s online databases for further relatives, provided you have a subscription.
You can assemble your family file manually or, if you have a GEDCOM file, you can import that. Data entry can include free-form notes for each person, plus separate research notes. You can also add new sources in one of several formats based on standard templates. You can categorise your media as photos, videos, audio clips, or scanned documents; or create your own media categories. Photos imported into FTM can be linked to individuals and organised into slideshows.
There are some strong competitors, such as UK-specific versions of Family Historian, with its easier-to-use interface, and RootsMagic, with more flexible data entry. Neither, though, is integrated online with a database such as Ancestry. This, along with some smart new features and improved performance, makes FTM 2011 our choice for budding genealogists.
