Dopo essersi laureato ad Harvard, il giovane avvocato Bryan Stevenson avrebbe potuto scegliere di svolgere fin da subito dei lavori redditizi.
Al contrario, si dirige in Alabama con l'intento di difendere persone condannate ingiustamente, con il sostegno dell'attivista locale Eva Ansley.
