Review:
Be advised, this presentation is vastly different from "This is the Sound".
On my first run through, I must admit I wondered why Cellar Darling had chosen to record such an unorthodox rendering of their music. So I listened to it again. Then again, this time with the words in front of me so I could follow along more intimately. And I was glad I made the effort.
Excellent vocals and captivating music are blended together in a hauntingly moody, evocative and ethereal performance that sucks you in and takes you on a personal journey of discovery.
Outstanding!
Review 2:
Cellar Darling's first album was catchy, well-performed metal with folk elements owing to the hurdy-gurdy, but this listener always felt that something was missing, given the band members' past in the eclectic band Eluveitie. After all, the band is only three permanent members plus rotating guest players.
The Spell is a huge step forward in expanding that sound, with doom metal elements and Anna bringing back the flute in addition to hurdy-gurdy and vocals.
The album at times evokes The Gathering during their Mandylion / Nighttime Birds phase, expertly weaving a tale of dark atmosphere and compelling storytelling. Performances are predictably excellent, with Anna's vocals showing impressive versatility and dynamics.
"Death" is a big highlight for the band, and easily their best song to date. "Insomnia" and "Love" both are strong offerings as well, and there truly is not a weak track on the album.
I hope they continue to experiment and expand their sound even further, but this is a terrific album, even if it's a little less accessible than their debut.
