Garage rock wasn't a concept that originated in the mid-'60s. In the aftermath of the initial rock & roll explosion, young rockabilly and R&B singers brought their unhoned talents into tiny studios throughout the country. This is a compilation of 26 of those efforts, mostly from the late '50s (mostly from 1958, in fact), and mostly for small independent labels, although some of these were leased to major labels, and a few were even recorded for major labels directly. Only one of these was a chart hit (Freddy Cannon's "Buzz Buzz A-Diddle-It"), and it's easy to see why, from two points of view. The approaches were too uncompromisingly raw, and the production too crude. On the other side of that coin, the songs themselves were rarely anything special, usually being standard three-chord knockoffs with little to make them stand out besides the ferocious energy of the performances. It's not great art, but it's certainly entertaining. That's especially true when the energy spills over to mania, as on the legendary Tyrone Schmidling's shambling sides, the incredibly sloppy rendition of "Good Golly Miss Molly" by Sam Cooke protégés the Valiants, or the echoed-to-infinity Tex-Mex-cum-Jerry Lee Lewis of the Rio Rockers (released on Capitol). There are some unexpected appearances by stars as well, such as Eddie Cochran (who plays guitar on Lee Denson's "New Shoes"), Brenda Lee (the early rockabilly track "Rock the Bop"), a teenaged Joe South, and Roy Clark (heard as a rockabilly singer). The collection's also educational in its own way, as an illustration of just how extreme and far-flung the rock & roll revolution had become at the grass roots level just a few years after its birth.
====
Another volume of raw 1950s rock where obscurity fights it out with quality. The former trait getting the upper hand more often than not, although you might have heard a few of the names here, particularly Wanda Jackson and Ronnie Dee (aka Ronnie Dawson). Like the first volume, it's an OK sampler of the range of unbridled sounds recorded in the wake of the original rock & roll explosion, from both white and (less often) black artists. Joe Clay's "Duck Tail," Big T Tyler's "King Kong," and Tarheel Slim's "No. 9 Train" are big enough cult favorites that they -- along with the Jackson and Dawson cuts -- are on Rhino's Loud, Fast & Out of Control '50s rock box set. The remainder of the CD consists of about 20 other high-octane performances that are, more often than not, quite derivative of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard, to name the most obvious targets. Sometimes the imitation is blatant enough to actually preclude even casual enjoyment; why listen to the Catalinas' "Speechless" when it's obvious as hell that it would not have existed if not for "Breathless" by Jerry Lee Lewis? On the other hand, some of the unknown tracks have their share of thrills, like Joyce Harris' screams-her-throat-raw version of "Got My Mojo Working." Some reasonably well-known names are scattered throughout the rest of the set: Roy Brown trying New Orleans rock & roll on "Saturday Night," Ersel Hickey doing "Goin' Down the Road," future soul singer Sugar Pie DeSantos duetting with Peewee, and Jerry Reed and Joe South playing the stormy acoustic guitars powering Ric Cartey's "Scratchin' on My Screen."
=========
Rockin' From Coast To Coast Vol 3; the third CD in this popular series of rare and classy rock'n'roll spanning a wide range of styles with the emphasis on WILD. 26 hand-picked selections, more than half of which are new to CD, including the recently discovered Texan rockabilly gem 'Too Much Loving Going On', Danny Dell's deranged 'Foggy Went A Courting', Flash Terry's frantic 'Cool It', Bobby Verne's super-rare 'Red Hot Car' (off master), Elroy Dietzel's 'Rock-N-Bones' (off master) and Mari Petti's uncanny Brenda Lee imitation, 'Hey Lawdy Lawdy'. In 1958, the American R&B vocalist Bertice Reading came over to the UK and belted out the powerful 'Rock Baby, Rock It' at Abbey Road, battering the tweedy Brit studio staff and session musicians into submission with the power of her voice! Of major interest will be the original version of the Fendermen's 'Muleskinner Blues' on the tiny Cuca label of Wisconsin.
